I was wondering who uses e-core's on a regular basis and what are their opinions about the construction of the filters. I know that many AC Delco oil filters are of e-core construction so anyone who has their service work done at a GM dealer is a dedicated e-core user (like it or not). Is that nylon cage strong as steel or does it really have to be?

When I had GM vehicals I used super tech ecores. After 60,000 miles the engine was still running strong.
I had a large stash of AC Delco pf1218 Ecores I got on clearance at Walmart for $1.50 each. I have used and cut open 4 or 5 and they have all looked great inside. I prefer the AC Delco classic filters, which are still made with metal end caps and center tube., but if I find a deal on Ecores, I have no trouble using them.
I use AC Delco parts on my parent's LeSabre and put the first E-core filter on yesterday. I will take a look inside next oil change. I have confinence that these style filters are engineered to work.
If the potential for a problem is genuine and higher than "normal," or I experience a problem, then I will use a Purolator Classic or a non E-core, if I can find one.

I have been using the deere variation of the e-cores for atleast a year and a half(whenever they switched over to them) on 5 different autos with no issues that i'm aware of.
at oil change time i always look inside and the cage has always been intact and everything else has looked good

I used to use ST e-cores exclusively, but after cutting open two of them and seeing media failure in one and a defective cage in another, I quit using them.
These were two filters for two different applications that were cut open a couple of weeks apart.

I used them @ $2.02 ..don't care for them at their current price. They were trumped big time by AA's BOGO on TotalGrip ..but that went away ..but other filters are only $0.25-$0.50 more
They were great of the beater extended fleet.
I have used them and cut open the last one that I used.It may have just been me but the endcaps could have had a better hold to the element.It has been a little while since using the ST but from what I remember,the element pleats were well spaced and it had a good amount of filter material.The endcaps just werent bonded as good as they should have been,they should have been harder to get loose.
I also am not real crazy about the cage,it needs to have more element support,there is too much gap in the cage to give the element the support that is needed.
