The idiot light on our Samsung fridge calls for replacement every 6 months. Sometimes I noticed the flow slowing down by then. Other times I do not. I typically replace it every 6-7 months though. Maybe that's too frequent? We have city water.

It is how some of the manufacturers make up for slim profit margins on the initial sale, just like Briggs & Stratton charging a huge amount for their name on an oil filter that they don't actually make.
You can also save money by getting an aftermarket water filter, but a lot of the replacements are made in China. I personally stay with the name-brand filters still made in USA.

The operator's manual for my 'fridge says the "change filter" light will come on every 750 gallons.

We wait till the idiot light comes on since we use so much of it. The pets drink it and I put it in the coffee maker and drink about 64oz. a day. You can taste the difference.

It's a GE.

Maybe it's in bypass, lol.

We use ours a lot too. We don't use it for coffee though.

Back when we were rehabbing homes, when the old appliances were removed I pulled a couple filters and broke them open. I don't know how long they were in there without being changed, but in every case they were fairly nasty, both contaminates and bacteria were present.

It convinced me to change mine both at home and the lake house every 6 months.

Same here.
The last two filters I just reset the light for another 6 months. Didn't notice any difference in water flow and taste, so that's the interval I'm sticking to.
Apparently the active charcoal can diminish over time, even if the filter is not used much, so 6-12 months probably is a good timeframe to change the filter.

Try Amazon. My Whirlpool filter is $50 at Sears but I always get 2 for $30-$40 on Amazon.

We replace the GE MWF every 6 months.

We also have a whole house filter, that really has a lot of iron in it in next to no time, but its an infrastructure issue...
