Water softeners which is best

I put a Kenmore in my old house 27 years ago. Zero issues with it in the time I owned the house after 25 yrs. of usage, I was a softener tech with them also. Regen on it was timed via water usage.
If on well water put a sediment filter in ahead of it to stop valve wear in the unit. I used iron fighter salt in it and every couple years I ran resin bed cleaner through it. I've forgotten who made it for them. I never had to replace a part in it in that time.

A few questions.

City or well water? What is in your water that you are trying to remove? If municipal water, is chlorine added to the water by the municipality? What is your hardness level?

Number one rule of water softener is that it can be removed , not replaced, or replaced, without disruption to the water supply to your home.

If well water is used, the softener must be recharged at a minimum of every 96 hours. You will want a controller that will do that.

My recommendation is to have a plumber prep the home for a water softener. Buy a fleck controller and the resin yourself, and do the install. The resin you pick will have a big impact. Almost no softeners come with the good resin, they almost always come with the cheap resin.

Currently I am running two softeners..one inside, with a fleck controller and will r chard every 400 gallons. I am also running a seasonal outside softener, which I can wheel into the garage when freezing weather approaches.

Whatever you do, think long and hard before calling out a local water softener company. Water softener salespeople often make slimy used car salesman look honorable.

With well water and iron in the water, a recommendation is both a iron filter and a water softener.

If the iron is light, one can often get away with just a water softener. If the iron in the water is moderate to heavy, the recommendation is both a iron filter, and a water softener.

Not sure if WaterBoss sells in Canada, if they do WaterBoss has a decent iron filter, and water softener.

Note iron filters are somewhat messy, unless you spend a lot on the iron filter. Less expensive iron filters typically require the brine tank being stirred once a week, and every quarter potassium permanganate being added.

Iron can be very challenging, especially if in moderate to heavy levels in well water.
