Does the light in your refrigerator that indicates when you need to change the water filter actually measure anything or just a time based indicator? It indicated I needed to change the filter several months ago and I just reset it and it only just began indicating that I needed to change the filter again. Our refrigerator is a Whirlpool if that makes any difference.

Ours actually stopped working after about a week of having the light on. Makes me wonder if it clogged up or if it is designed to stop working after a certain period to force you to replace the filter. I didn't bother resetting the light without changing the filter to see if it would work again. Didn't think of it tell after I replaced the filter.

these filters are usually 1 micron filters and about the size of an oil filter on a toyota so I could imagine it could clog up. I did notice an increase in water pressure after the filter replacement so I guess it really did need to be changed.

I think ours (2006 GE) is just a 6 month counter. Some of the newer units measure volume these days, so it is possible to have a more advanced counter...

It's the same on our 2009 Samsung. However, by then, the water pressure significantly decreases which I suppose indicates that the filter is fairly clogged up.

I waited until the ice maker stopped. Sure I had to get a hair dryer to thaw the water tube to the ice maker, but that only takes a few minutes. I now know it takes 3 years & a couple months to sufficiently plug with our water quality (RO, no less). So, I'm not running a filter in the fridge now anyway b/c of the aforementioned RO supply. It seemed like a waste to just throw away the filter that came with the fridge.

I have a GE bottom freezer model and my light came on about a week ago and I ordered a new one off Amazon today. I don't know if it is a 6 month counter, but since it was brought up I'll mark down when I changed it and see what it does.
