Does anyone know of a quality aftermarket brand of refrigerator water filters? The cheapest I can find the Whirlpool Everydrop filter for my refrigerator is $47.99. I think that’s ridiculous considering it’s only good for 300 gallons of water. Considering the way my wife drinks water I’ll probably need 3 a year. I’d blow it off but our water is pretty **** hard and I’d really like the refrigerator to last a long time. I’ve got a water-softener but the plumber said not to have the drinking water soft. Any suggestions?

Home Depot has some store branded filters, they don't make one for my refrigerator but I would try it. I'd we weary of anything on Amazon or ebay. I do the subscribe and save on Amazon for the OEM filter, still cheaper and more environmentally friendly than bottled water.

I use AquaFresh filters for our Maytag refrig for six years (WF295), from Amazon. They run $12.50 each in a 2 pack. Have had zero issues with them. Like your Whirlpool, the Maytag OEM filters run around $50 and I have noticed no difference in performance.

Just keep using the filters longer then the recommended interval, I bet there is no difference even with 2x the usage. I change them once a year and short of scientific testing, water seems fine.

Yep, go with an RO system either plumbed to the fridge or by itself. Bypass filter on the fridge then will be all you need, cost will be comparable to only 2 years or so of fridge filters, and the water will be way better than what the fridge filter is capable of producing.

I buy the filters off Amazon. They are expensive but I also reset the filter minder at least once before replacing the filter. I usually go 6+ months on a filter.

Just my $0.02

I buy these at filterway.com: Filterway

They offer filters for many different brands of refrigerators. Since I have a one-micron whole house filter I hit the reset at least two times before changing.

Some of that is odd, unless you’re on a severely sodium restricted diet there’s no reason to avoid drinking soft water. Besides the filter on the refrigerator won’t remove hardness ions anyway so it’s not doing anything in that regard. But as far as cheap filters go I have found that they do not work that well for me, we have city well water and sometimes it’s a bit yellow and can have a weird smell or taste and the cheap filters don’t remove that as well. I’ve resigned to paying the $50 for the expensive ones but YMMV.

I have found that I can hit reset on my filters 3 or 4 times before I notice any kind of restriction of flow.
The filter can only hold so much contamination and when it reaches that limit it starts to dump them back into the water supply.
Thats why there is a recommended change time.
Geez don't cheap out on the water you drink.

What happens if water filter is not changed?
As your water filter begins to wear out, it will become less effective at filtering out the various chemicals, minerals, and microbes that may be present in the water supply. This may soon become apparent to you in the form of changes in the taste and odor of the water coming from your refrigerator.

What happens if you drink water from an old filter?
If you use an old filter, you risk drinking contaminated water. Studies have shown that old filters provide a conducive environment for the growth of biofilm which means the water will most likely be contaminated with bacteria.
