RedLine Oil as a cleaner

I am going to give my truck an Oil Change today. Would adding one litre of Redline oil help as a cleaner. I am going to be useing PP 5w-30 and a wix filter. I dont trust the quik engine flushes. I keep reading how Redline is such a good cleaner as a oil. Do you think it would help me??

The truck is a 2004 Ram Hemi 80K

I think you'd be better off using Auto-RX if you really want a safe and effective engine cleaner. But if don't have any on hand, and only have the Redline, I'd say that adding a liter during your oil change is better than nothing.

Ditto. Auto-RX will get your 80k engine very clean. Just be sure to use conventional oil for it, don't waste your PP!

No I wont use Auto-Rx. I live in canada and dont want to have to order something. I thought about Redline because I can just go to the store and buy it. Maybe PP will be strong enough to clean it up. Its used Dino its whole life.

The rule of thumb is that it's fine to blend your Red Line with conventional, but just about any oil scientist will tell you that it's not helpful to mix two different brands of synthetics.

As an example. I received an email from Pennzoil.com yesterday stating they do not recommend my 50-50 mix of the old bottle Pennzoil Synthetic with Pennzoil Platinum. They recommend I only use either one for stuff like half-quart top-offs.

Synthetics are a different breed. I blend all the time -- but I have-yet to blend two synthetics. Will it damage your vehicle -- I doubt it. But there's something in the inter-chemistries of synthetics that these oil companies don't want to see us mixing. My guess is because it raises wear levels & shortens oil life on oils that we all expect to double or triple the OCI.

My bet is that your engine probably isn't dirty inside anyhow. If it has 80,000km on it, that is still pretty new, and even if it's 80,000 miles, you must've been doing a lot of highway driving to get up that high since 2004. Either way, your engine is probably not in need of any cleaning at all.

PP won't clean anything up, and Red Line probably wouldn't either. Both oils would be a great choice for keeping an engine clean, but I don't think either has the ability to clean up an engine.

If I thought I needed autorx I would order it. I just dont think I need it. I guess I will be sticking with the PP for the Oil Change. I bought 4 jugs of PP at Canadian tire last week. I thought maybe I should put in a litre of RedLine to help clean. Most of the 80KM are Highway.

All esters aren't created equal. There would be a difference in the esters found in Redline and those found in ARX. RL's are made for lubrication while ARX's are made specifically for cleaning. I would suppose there would be a certain amount of cleaning from running redline but not like you will get from a dedicated cleaner. I would run ARX, and then when the cleaning is totally done, run redline if you choose to keep your engine as clean as possible.

There are posts on here where Terry Dyson has said many times that motor oils are not cleaners. They do not have the chemistry or detergents required to cause any significant cleaning of old deposits.

From time to time we do see someone post that switching to some synthetic oil did gradually clean their engine over a period of one or two years. But adding one quart of Redline is not all that likely to do much. It certainly won't begin to emulate an ARX cleaning program.

Just run straight Redline for 10-12K and enjoy both worlds.

Don't waste your money, the answer is no.

PP is such a different chemistry than RL you are clashing the chemistries in my humble opinion.

What do your UOA's show for cleanliness readings?

I took before/after pics under my valve cover when I ran one fill of redline for 6k miles. Abosolutely no difference at all.

Running a batch of Mobil "Delvac 1" or the Amsoil 10w-30 diesel oil (ACD), will provide a significant cleaning effect - provided you leave the oil in for at least 16,000km.

The key is using a synthetic oil with a significant ester content...

Now come on..where does that come from...? Who has quantified how many OCI's of redline it takes to "make a difference?" Terry has said it would take 3 changes to level off wear metals, but....

I just want to point out, once again, everyone talks about the cleaning effects of various oils on here but we NEVER actually SEE dirty engines being cleaned up on here with such oils. We've seen arx, neutra, LC20, and a few other specialty products clean up dirty engines but really...I'm at a loss to find much photographic evidence of oils alone cleaning anything.....

You might try running two oil change interval with Redline as the full crank case fill.

Would the Delvac 1 be too thick to run in my Hemi?? Maybe next summer that is what I should try?? As of now I am going to just use PP and start getting UOA done. I also thought of running really short OCI with some cheap Dino oil.

WAIT A MIN!!!

I thought using PP with Auto RX was prefered. I remember reading a post from Frank that said something about the current Castol GTX "sludge fighter" not being ideal, and that PP could be used in its place.
