Mercedes specs Shell ATF 3403 M115 for this tranny (2006 c280 4matic) that is only available at the dealer with astronomical markup.

Is anyone else using Redline D4 fuild instead and what are pros/cons of doing so?

You might want to consider Valvoline Maxlife if you are looking to save a few bucks. I believe the 722.6 trans originally called for 236.10 sheet. After the 7 speeds came out MB reformulated their fluid to 236.12 sheet, and recommended that for the 5 speeds as well. Now they recommend 236.14 for the 722.6 trans. Whatever you use, I would make sure it meets one of those specs.
There is also a electrical plug that is known to leak on that trans. It is located on the passenger side toward the front.

Because the specification for viscosity is so close in all case's. You are normaly talking so little difference that a cold night or a few thousand miles of use and shearing would make them all in the same ball park. Same thing goes for many transmissions frictional cofient demands. You have to rember that many OEM's do not build all of their own transmissions. For insttance Aisin owned by Toyota and GM both build and sell some of their transmissions to other companies especialy in Europe. Seldom do these companies require a completly different fluid unless it is a must. You also have to keep in mind that most Asian transmissions today have adapative fuzy logic in their make up! So as the fluid shears and the clutch pack's wear they addaptive their pressure and speed of shifts to make up for the wear of the clutch packs and shearing of the fluid. All of this is a plus for those that want to use non-OEM fluids.

Their are some transmission that are super piscky but they are the exception not the norm. Chryslers ATF+4 is one instance and Mitsubishi had some really picky transmisions inthe past.
