Thank you Kshachn for this helpful insight. I wonder what might be (if any) advantages to Redline 5w30 ( white bottle/high performance). It is obtainable for almost freeActually it’s Ow49.
And to the OP what you’re using is fine. Use Red Line if you want but wear isn’t the improvement with an oil like Red Line.
Thank you Edyvw- I will remember that principle. I agree Castrol 0w 30 is a leading choice but I have been reflecting and wonder if Redline 5w30 is almost as good ( or am I unaware (not impossible lol) of something/s. At this point Castrol 0w30 appears better for me than Mobil1. I should add it is possible to get Redline for almost free from FCPPPE is between 3.8 and 3.9cP.
PPE is very good oil. GTL base will benefit HTHS and low Noack.
But don't get stuck on HTHS. Wear does not go down just because HTHS is a bit higher. Thicker oil will also create more resistance and generate more heat.
Remember rule: "as thin as possible, as thick as necessary."
Thanks again Jag - I have been reflecting a bit on your comments and Edyvw’s and have learned more than a bit. I have a Pennzoil Euro vs Pennzoil Ultra question that I wonder if you could speak to. I noticed that Pennzoil puts PP Euro in its full synthetic but not its ultra performance/ Ultra Platinum line. A recent analysis on YouTube showed the Ultra Platinum oils had a higher quality base oil/ additive mix with esters (boron esters). I wonder if the Ultra Platinum 0w40 might work well ? Appreciate your inputThanks Jag- the points you make reflect thorough analysis- I wonder what the HTHS is for the Pp or QS - certainly PP can be argued to be as good as M1 And Castrol 0w30 ? All three seem great
Higher that is than their Platinum line of oilsThanks again Jag - I have been reflecting a bit on your comments and Edyvw’s and have learned more than a bit. Ultra vs. Platinum in your case or Euro vehicle case is irrelevant. What matters are approvals. Thanks again Jag - I have been reflecting a bit on your comments and Edyvw’s and have learned more than a bit. Redline is good oil, but it is more of a track oil. I would stick to Casttol Edge 0W30.Thank you Edyvw- I will remember that principle. How is a e46 with 310k not leaking from somewhere?Thanks- I thought that might be the case. Your input makes me wonder if there is some other improvement to support Redline. I’m not sure if high esters would hurt or help. The car isn’t burning oil or leaking right now ( so great lol)
Thank you again - that is exactly the video I spoke of. I appreciate your thorough (and compelling) analysis. I feel with your and Edyvw’s patient comprehensive help I have my answers. Castrol 0w30 and Pp 5w40 euro are both great. Now I need to flip a coin to see which one to try first. So great, you guys- thanks againDue to the last SDS I saw and the very low volatility, I think PP Euro 5W-40 has mostly or maybe entirely GTL base oils, which are very close to PAO in properties/performance. There may be some alkylated naphthalene as well. Those are not listed in SDS and nothing in a VOA shows them. It does not seem to contain ester base oils, according to VOAs. I do not think Pennzoil Ultra Platinum has a better base oil mix, even if it contains a small amount of esters. I think I know which video of Lakespeed Jr’s video you got the information you referenced. The 5W-40 Euro additive package is unique in the Pennzoil lineup. I do not think it is safe to say that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum additive package is overall better than Euro 5W-40’s additive package. LS Jr looked at additive elements of Ultra Platinum and Platinum, then concluded the former is better than the latter, if I recall correctly. It probably is better because one would expect the better additive package in the more expensive oil. But the Platinum oil he looked at was not Euro 5W-40 and nobody can look at additive elements in a UOA or VOA and say one is better than the other. Yet, people think they can. Some things can be inferred but one being better than the other overall is not one of them.
It is only after fixing the two coolant pipes near the engine block that the e46 has been free of leaks. The oil filter housing gasket and valve cover have all been replaced in the last 60k mi. Totally worth itHow is a e46 with 310k not leaking from somewhere?
I maintained a e46 for 11 years fixed a ew leaks and didn't fix a few it was only at 189k
Most helpful. I may have an urge to try something good but also new to me. Would Motul 8100 x chess 5w40 gen 2 be acceptable (also would the Redline be if not as good but still quite good for my e46 ? After this I believe we have reviewed all contenders lolRedline is good oil, but it is more of a track oil. I would stick to Casttol Edge 0W30.
I use Motul X-Cess GEN2, on street and track. Excellent oil. Most helpful. I may have an urge to try something good but also new to me. Sincerely appreciate input- I think I may give Motul a goI use Motul X-Cess GEN2, on street and track. Excellent oil.
Redline is very good oil. But additive package and base stocks are geared to track/racing. Wear is not an issue there. Deposits, gasket failure might.
Yes. Doesn't change what I stated.there are many out there with these miles..
Motul 5w40 has been performing very well for last 1500 miles. The car seems to run stronger and smoother and has a more solid feel compared to Mobil euro 0w40. I wonder if this makes sense- this impression seems more than just my imaginationSincerely appreciate input- I think I may give Motul a go![]()
Nope, it does not make sense unfortunatelyMotul 5w40 has been performing very well for last 1500 miles. The car seems to run stronger and smoother and has a more solid feel compared to Mobil euro 0w40. I wonder if this makes sense- this impression seems more than just my imagination
