If my sample went from 20ppm to 80ppm, I would be much more concerned that you, apparently. That is a 400% increase in ppm. That is indicative of an event that is unwarranted and unexpected. If my sample went form 20ppm to 3000ppm, I'd simply freak. Perhaps your threshold is a bit higher than the rest of us?

Regarding the "shear factor" I'll agree that the HEUI systems are fairly hard on the oil, but I've also pointed out many times that (speaking of 7.3L and 6.0L PSDs) they simply tend to favor a 30 grade lube. Put in a 15w-40, and you'll have a 30 grade at the end of 5k miles. Put in a 10w-30, and you'll probably still have a 30 grade at 5k miles. They only seem to shear oil down to a certain point, and then it levels off.

How well RL fairs in shearing I cannot speak to. But I will say that if one is going to OCI every 5k miles due to a fear of shearing, then I see ZERO sense in using anything but a dino HDEO, excluding e-x-t-r-e-m-e cold.
