Recommend remanufactured engine sources?

It's been my experience that remanufactured engines that were done by a huge business are junk.

It's been years but when we sold " bonded" engines thay were garbage. I once bought a reman from a parts store and it needed a valve job 40000 miles later.

Imo better off with a local rebuilder, low milage used or new OEM.

In my experience, the only reman engines we've had any kind of luck using at the shop were all sourced from OE. We installed multiple ATK engines a few years back and had them all back out for one reason for another; leaks, knocking, and low oil pressure among other things. Their warranty costs extra, and then on top of that they decide what and how the warranty pays, meaning the shop ends up taking it in the shorts. Not to mention the customer, who just spend a mint, ends up back in the shop multiple times for us to square away their junk. As far as Jasper is concerned, our only experience with them was a favor to a customer; he had had a Chrysler 3.6 installed in his Wrangler in a different state that was setting timing codes; got the valve cover off and found a cam that looked like it had been beaten with a hammer. Ended up warranty replacing the whole engine with the customer paying the difference between our price and what the warranty would cover, only to have that engine throw a rod out of it inside of a year later. We ended up switching gears and now usually recommend low mileage used engines from LKQ, and have had great luck.
ATK warranty on motors is 3 or 4 yrs (depends on motor) with unlimited miles. They do build crap sometimes but now they do pay full shop labor and I have been reimbursed a few times but it does take 4-6+ weeks for them to pay.

From what I've heard (from my Ford dealer parts manager) Motorcraft rebuilds come from AER out of Texas. Other sources offer AER engines. I believe they are significantly identical to the MC engines at a much cheaper price. The warranty hourly reimbursement is about twice as high for the MC as it is for the other non-Jasper engines, though I think the years and mileage coverages were the same. The AER 5.4 3V I bought came from https://www.eagleenginesales.com/ but a lot of others cursed with the 5.4 3V bought theirs from either Powertrain Solutions or Powertrain Products. The names are so close, that I don't recall which. I know my mechanic buddy seems to have lost some faith in Jasper, but they did pay him pretty well when he had to perform warranty work.

Great find

According to this page, they do work for Ford, GM, Chrysler, Nissan, Subaru, and Volvo.

Here is where AER confirms they are the supplier for OE Reman Ford/Motorcraft engines

WOW! That is a great find and I never heard of them but I like what I read! Also - they are about 25min from me yet I never knew. I am going to ask my AZ commercial acct mgr if they can get these motors for me and I will also ask AER directly if I can get them myself.

I think there actually very few commercial rebuilders of stock OE engines. A lot of places that bill themselves as rebuilders are just resellers of AER. Sometimes they'll even admit it on the phone. I doubt AER will sell direct, but maybe you can will call through an engine supplier and cut out shipping.

Edit: It turns out AER is the OEM overhaul supplier and Advanced Powertrain Solutions (APS) is the aftermarket division. The APS website looks almost identical to the AER website.

I appreciate your info! I am going to contact my parts supplier monday and see if they have the ability to get these and I am calling AER and see if they sell to shops. This is great news as I would love to remove the ATK sourced motors from my business if possible.

I would take a wild guess that AER is owned by ATK, just like I think LKQ is. It seems those 3 letter engine outfits are all the same outfit, its just easier to change the name once everyone knows how bad the product is. Just a guess though not sure.

One other thing, even someone that is the top of the top can have a failure, like a valve dropping, in many cases that is a material issue, I had it happen once on an industrial diesel engine, I had no control over the heat treat of the part that failed.

That is EXACTLY the 1st question I am asking when I call because ATK owns every place I have seen lately as they continue buying up all these shops.

But it looks like ATK does not own them:

ATK is owned by LKQ. AER/APS appears to be privately owned. Jasper is employee owned. That's an interesting list. I'd be interested to see their unit sales in a list. I'm a little surprised there are so many corporate engine rebuilders. I'm sure they all are capable of quality work, but I'd be inclined to go with one that does work for the OE parts chain.
