Hi guys, well it seems that I want to run a 0w30 oil in my 2009 gmc sierra 5.3 with afm, my truck has 33xxx miles on her and she isn't burning oil. I was leaning towards m1 0w 30 but I've read here on bitog that its not that great of an oil especially since at start up its not much thinner than most synthetic 5w30s, so please shoot me recommendations, also take into account that I plan on doing 5k mile oci's and I want an oil that is easy to come by.

I will be mixin 2 quarts Redline 0W-30 with the rest conventional 5W-30.. I have a GMC Safari, and its super high miles - approaching 200k!

I say the Redline because its 0W-30 is more like a 40-weight. Also, is 0W, so, summer or winter, should be fine.

For the other three quarts, I can run something cheap and conventional. 5k OCIs, maybe 7k.

And FWIW: M1 AFE 0W-30 and RL 0W-30 are basically the only two you will find.

M1 AFE 0w30 is a good lube, my brother uses it in his v6 mustang.

ive heard that PP or M1 5w30 flows just as well in all but the extreme cold. someone more knowledgeable on oil cold flow properties will need to chime in on that, however.

in texas i dont think extreme cold is and issue, nonetheless the 0w30 should work well.

You have limited options with 0w-30

Mobil 1 0w-30, Walmart $25/jug
Redline 0w-30, Amazon $12/qt
Amsoil 0w-30, Somewhere for probably $10-12/qt
Motul 0w-30, Amazon, $$$
Renewable Lubricants, $$$

OR

CATERHAM BLEND: Mix some Toyota Genuine 0w-20 and Mobil 1 0w-40 to get a very high viscosity index oil.

Only ever seen M1 0w30 in these parts - I recommend it as its the easiest to find.

Any 0w30 will work well for your application however at the end of the day.

I have not seen PP 0-30 either-I do not think it is made

I do not care for Mobil-1-every engine I've tried it in gets noisey

Our 04 Tahoe 5.3 has been running happily on whatever 5-30 I pour in it-mostly Valvo Synpower

My vote would be Castrol 0-30 MAde in Germany-- aka German Castrol (GC)

Plenty of protection for the summer Texas sun run

Pennzoil doesn't make a 0w30 here in the states.... Only 0w20

There is no PP 0w-30. You probably saw 0w-20.

i guess im mistaken. i could have swore i saw PP 0w30 the other day...

Amsoil...10.55 "normal" price, 8.15 a quart if you become a preferred customer ($20 a year).

Can't get more convenient than delivered to your house.

With this oil you can go to 10k OCI; I've tested it at that distance in both our vehicles -- UOAs at 10k showed the oil was still in great shape and could have gone further. Will be going back to 10k OCI once I used up my current stash of non-Amsoil.

Haven't really seen any other 0w30 in my travels, with the exception of M1 or Castrol.

Best 0W-30 for Texas IMO would be Castrol Edge (with Syntec) in the black bottle. This is the stuff made in Germany. I see it on sale once in a while for $5 or less/qt. Really in Texas, PP 5W-30 would be just fine. No need for a 0W-30.

But if the OP is worried that Mobil 0W-30 is slinky thicker than some 5W-30 and then someone needs totell him that Castro Edge 0W-30 is MUCH thicker than normal 5W-30 and Mobil's 0W-30.

Personally, I would use Mobil's 0W-30. I have tried it and it is an excellent oil and for this month Pep Boys has a coupon for 5 quarts of any Mobil synthetic and a true long OCI oil filter, Mobil EP for $30!!!

M1 0W-30 AFE is a very good oil.
Check the UOA forum for some empirical evidence.
This M1 and GC are the only widely available off the shelf 0W-30s offered in this country.
GC is an entirely different oil, intended for European applications that typically require a forty grade.
It meets various MB, VW and BMW requirements.
It has HTHSV of at least 3.5, while the M1 has HTHSV of more like 3.0, siginificantly lower.
It would not be as good a choice for your thirty grade spec engine as would the M1.
Mobil specifically recommends its 0W-30 AFE for all 5W-30 applications, AFAIK.

Keep in mind that GC 0w-30 is almost a 40.

The only other 0w30 that's actually sold in stores is the M1.

M1 0w30 has the dexos1 license too, and will last well beyond 5k or whatever your OLM would suggest.

Someone else mentioned the Toyota 0w20/M1 0w40 blend which also works well.
