I am looking to replace a 3rd or 4th hand ancient Altec Lansing speaker system for our home PC. The current system is very noisy- it pops and hums when not in use, but in use performance is satisfactory.

Looking to spend ~100 and would like something with some low frequency response- I like some bass.

I have some Harman Kardon speakers. I think I paid a bit more than 100 bucks for them, but I really do like them. Seem to hold up well and do sound good. I don't game, but the internet and music sound nice when I use them.

Creative labs makes a really good sounding speaker setup.

my creative speakers are super tiny, and just boom with ultimate clarity!
I also have a pair of logitech speakers, left & right only, they look like nothing, but when you plug 'em in.. they're so clear it's insane!

This.

$100 really keeps you in the commodity Creative Labs and Logitech speaker sets. If you can find a set of ProMedia for a reasonable price (Klipsch no longer makes them and stock is drying up, pushing the prices higher), it's probably your best option.

Quattro Pete, I'd definitely consider the Klipsch set up, do you know how they connect? My current sound card only has a series of 3.5mm plugs on the back. Do they still use those? Man I'm out of touch!!!

Creative are great. I have a set for my computer and for my HD TV as well. Love them.

Too bad that Boston Acoustics doesn't seem to make computer speakers any longer (unless you build your own setup). I had one of their 4.1 setups back in the late 1990s. That was amazing.

Yes, just regular 3.5mm mini RCA jack.

Quattro Pete had previously posted a link for this Logitech Z623 set for $99. Here's the link again

I've been looking for a new speaker set for the computer myself, so this discussion is timely. The Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 is probably the way I'll go. Best Buy has them in stock, in store and online, for $139. But the Logitech Z623 is looking good, too.
I don't have a use other than CDs, DVDs, downloaded music, and internet use on my laptop and tower. The Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 may see use with a 60" Samsung Plasma, too.

Keep the suggestions and comments coming !

wow 140$ for the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 is good.

its not audiophile good but about as close are you are going to get. without a full setup.

I like the klipsch promedia 2.1 or if you're looking for one without a dedicated sub then bose companion 2 series iii is right at $100.

Agreed. If space is no issue, this is the right way to go.

That looks interesting. Is that the Onkyo CS455 ? How would it hook up to the computer ? I can see using it as is in my garage/workshop, though. I need a nice bookshelf set up for out there.

Yup. It's the CS455 mini-system. Goes for about $200 on Amazon. I have it supplemented with a 10" Velodyne sub which was another $100 or so. I picked this Onkyo mini-system specifically because it has a dedicated subwoofer RCA output.

But if space is not an issue in your garage, you might be able to do it cheaper just by grabbing a used receiver and some tower speakers off CL, as someone else suggested.

Just a regular mini-RCA to standard 2xRCA cable.
