recommend a pickup to pull horse trailer

rationull: in my recent research for what it may/not be worth, it seems like fuel economy unloaded is near the same for all the gas 3/4 ton trucks- 15mpg. so why not get an 8.1L since the intended use of the truck is to tow and it has an allison trans. And if anything you might get a better deal on an 8.1 because nobody wants them because of perceived fuel economy so they don't sell as quick as a 6.0L.
2007 was the last year that had an 8.1L.
2005 most likely had 5-speed allison, 2006/7 had a 6-speed.

Oh, I'm all for the 8.1. Biggest engine with the most pulling power wins in my book, modulo price and reliability concerns. Our truck is used pretty much exclusively for towing, not as a DD, and only gets ~1500 miles a year so fuel economy isn't really a concern.

Sounds like an 8.1 with 6 speed would be a catch. Is that still the direction you're leaning?

what kind of hauler you talking about?

if you can get a horse to back up into the trailer.
all of the trailers I know are set up for face first loading, so their chest is against the bar so when you it the brakes they lean up against that. Don't know how their rear would do against it, and the rear of the trailer is closed so unless you have a slit door they'll be eating the rear door whenever you accelerate.

i think so. it sounds like the acceleration issue i had on a 2006 i test drove versus a 2005 which moved might be a tq mgmt issue. I wonder if the 2005 had it tuned out.
