Recent Consumer Reports rating of tires

I go with the paralysis by analysis method and watch way too much Tyre Reviews, Tire Rack Tests, and maybe some YT's, then read the reviews of users and CR. After that I'll spend hours on BITOG seeing who says what. After that the sale/rebates, availability and warranty/road hazard play a big factor. I'll normally have 3-4 that I need to decide between from all of that.

I have to reason out the actual use, my daily drive mix of highway, town roads, trips in my Accord while saying I have a 6MT and like shifting pretending I have a sporty vehicle :ROFLMAO:. The tires on kids and wife's cars will get replaced earlier, mine may go to 3/32" depending on wet grip/hydroplaning observations.

I'm here to say that I had a set of Michelin LTX M/S 2 that became unsafe at 5/32 and 5 years old. I don't rely on wear bars or marketing statements to dictate when tires need replacing.
It's weird, though, for a tire company to say "buy fewer tires!" At least to me. Do they get like environmental credits or something? Where's the money?

Haven't met anyone or anything in business yet that doesn't try to sell you their product before you need it. So what's the catch??? 🤷‍♂️

But yeah, I have usually run to 4/32nds and if heading into winter replace or summer wait until later in the fall.

Agree. That's why I took it to heart. Would be very easy for them to say "replace at 4/32" for best safety!" and sell more tires. I'll keep running these and see how they do.

I had a son-in-law in Goldsboro NC but USAF told him he is needed more in Louisiana so he is moving there this weekend (and not too happy about it).

But daughter has decided to move to Wilmington NC so I will have a daughter in NC in 6 months.

Those prices are a lot less than BJs. How's the sales sales tax in NC? DE has none.
I know a Colonel stationed at Barksdale AFB

My main home, when not working in Europe, is in Wilmington and just a few miles from Carolina beach. Taxes are low in Wilmington but the housing is expensive. I pay less property taxes on my $550k home than I did on a $300k home in Lexington, Kentucky. My only complaint about Wilmington is the lack of career opportunities in my field. If i move back, i will have to commute to Lejune, Langley, or Bragg.

The cross climate 2/3 are the only tires that I think Michelin makes that are worth buying?
That’s wrong. Michelins are universally excellent. The knock on Michelins is high price. I pulled defenders off my SUV after 90,000 miles, and they still rode nicely and had tread for more mileage. Replaced with a different tire because I was too cheap to pony up $2,000 on a $5,000 car with 200k miles and still regret it.

Based on my experience, my two complaints about Michelins are shallow starting tread depth compared to competitors and how quickly they dry rot. I spoke with a Michelin rep about the dry rot cracking and he said it is because they use more natural rubber in their products. That being said, I have been a Conti guy for a long time.

I have also had good experiences with Michelin. We have 30,000 miles on a set of Cross Climate 2s, and they are getting down to about 5-6/32" so the Discount Tire folks are starting to hassle us when we get the air checked now. So I was initially disappointed in them, but then I found this from Michelin. Michelin has a 60,000 mile warranty on these.

Seems that Michelin recommends you keep running them until you hit the wear bars. This is interesting, because Discount Tire will hassle you to no end to buy new ones at 5/32", contradicting Michelin themselves.
thats why i stopped buying tires at discount tires. I stopped by discount last time i went, and they said all my tires are burnt out and wanted new tires installed because they were unsafe. Took it to costco and the guy said no, you still got another 10k left of tread. Discount was having my replace my tires at around 20k on a 40k tire. I went through 3 sets in 5 years on my gti mk7 at 62k before a kid hit me and wrecked it. Now they last around 35k and are still safe.

Also a side note, my tpms malfunctioned once, saying my tire was low. took it to discount and they inspected it. Discount said it needs replacing and need to replace both tires. They said it was leaking from the side wall and couldnt be fixed. So they inflated it to about 65 psi(max for the tire was 50), so i could " get home without it getting too low". Took it straight to Costco, they inspected it, couldnt find a leak, put the proper psi in, and it lasted another 15k. No leak was there

edit, that was two different discount tires stores in tempe az

How did you get Costco to look at a tire they didn't install?

I had to go with Tire Rack for our Cross Climate 2s. Neither Costco nor Discount Tire had them in any location in the US. I could only find them on Tire Rack. I asked Costco if they'd install them, and they said they could only install tires they sold. They couldn't work on tires they didn't install. I guess though if you're offering to buy new ones from them for a reason they could check (like your leak) maybe they'd at least confirm the leak for free before throwing away good tires.

"What surprised us is the sporty suspension on the new Camry."
I stopped taking them seriously when they dinged an excellent car for “rear seat comfort.” Right, because everyone jams 5 people in a sedan for long road trips.

Their objective data is helpful. Their subjective assessments—and there are many—are just laughable at times.

My son just bought a new used car that came with new lexanis. There’s no fine line between a “used car lot” tire and anything Continental, Michelin or Bridgestone. These things sound like he has 4 bad wheel bearings. He’s in the navy so will have to deal with them until they need replaced, which will probably be forever. Cheap tires seem to last and only get louder with every mile.

I bet he could trade them for something used but better at a used tire place, for nothing or very little money?
Or sell privately and find something pretty quiet with good wet grip, and relatively cheap from CR tests?

There are some very good performance AS tires out there, for DD usage, from the mid-level tire companies.
I called up the local wrecker to see what they had and ended up with a set of used rebranded Sailun Atrezzo SVA2 UHP all seasons, on my new to me Impreza, as I didn't want to spend $900-1000+ on decent AS tires for it(silly 17" rims on it.)
I'm sure they lose a direct competition to the top tier UHP AS tires, but they are quiet, and have very good wet and dry grip, compared to any "regular" all-season I've had, including some Michelin defenders. If you, don't do a ton of miles, use winter tires, and tend to age out tires before wearing out, a 2nd tier UHP AS tire is quite an upgrade to most of the "touring" level AS tires that are tweaked to last for high miles.

He’s gotta make the drive from southern California to northern Washington so I ordered him a set of Bridgestones from his local Walmart. $500 out the door and road hazard thanks to my plus membership that pays for itself by not having to step foot in there. He’s got a fellow sailor who can use the Lexanis so it all worked out.

I’m at the point with Bridgestones that if they’re on sale, and or similarly priced to Continental I’m buying them. The set of turanzas I got for a steal have been some of the best tires I’ve ever owned. They wore down to 8/32nds somewhat quick but have leveled off and are on track to get 50k out of them. For a 235/40r19 that’s pretty impressive. Factor in that they’re staying dead silent and Walmart actually got the balance right and I’m ecstatic!

Coopers models are all fitting into pro-lines, hence the ProControl. Give it 10 years & they'll be pared down to having just a few more models than Kelly.
