Recent Consumer Reports rating of tires

Looking over the recent ratings from Consumer Reports.

Michelin has several top rated tires as does Continental and others.

What I find is Cooper has only one tire in the ratings and is not top rated.

It's may be hard to use the ratings as they seem to be for a sedan so it you have a pickup you may not find many tire models for you pickup.

Not sure just because Michelin has the top rated tire that all Michelin tires are top rated.

Actually Michelin makes several models of tires that are both extremely popular and well rated by both CR and users here.

Absolutely. Consumer Reports constantly reminds their readers that just because some models from a brand may be rated highly, does not mean that all models from that brand would also perform well.

All-Season Tires

It was rated in the middle...the catagory "all season tires', none were rated particularly high as that is a tough catagory to excel in all catagories of dry, wet and snow.

12 or so years ago, Cooper did have a highly rated ultra high performance summer tire by CR. I think it was number 2 or 3 in the ratings. I bought a set and thought they were okay, but went back my usual Continental or Michelin options. I found they got pretty noisy as they wore during the first year of use.

Were you expecting Cooper tires to be rated better? They really don't make any outstanding tires. Good tires, yes. But they have never been on the cutting edge of researching new rubber compounds or tread designs, like any of the A tier tire manufacturers.

Cooper is a solid B tier tire manufacturer. They offer a good product at a lower price point than the leaders. That attracts a solid loyal customer base. But they have never been a tire brand of choice for those that are looking for the best performing tires. I suspect the vast majority of Cooper tire customers have rarely, if ever, looked at tire reviews and ratings. That's not part of their tire selection process. A family member recommended Cooper to them. Or the guy behind the counter at the Cooper tire store said that Cooper tires are a great value.

I have no long term data howver the $500 Chinese brand all weather tires that are Made in Thailand are really decent on my 2013 Acura RDX. I commute 100 miles round trip 10 days/ month.

While they tend to be pricey, the best usually is. I have never been sorry I stepped up to Michelin.
Recently I've found Continental to be exceptional as well.

I put a set of Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires on our high mileage 2006 Acura TSX; the ride is exceptional. Money well spent, IMO.

What stuff did you buy? I used to get the year end books with Consumer Reports reviews years ago but stopped. I'd occasionally visit the library for their recommendations, but there are so many other sources these days.
