Alright guys. I've been around here for a few months and have learned a lot. I want to get some feedback though. My dad recently purchased a used '04 Colorado Z71 (3.5L I-5). It has 30K miles on it and I'm going to change the oil (along with some other things) this weekend. The truck is driven mostly around town and tows a 16' Basstracker boat (pretty light) a few times a month. I don't think he wants to go synthetic because of the cost. He's a lifetime banker/accountant so he's super cheap. I have a couple oils in mind but I wanted to get the experts' feedback.

1) Penzoil 5w30 - 5K OCI's
2) Mobil Clean 5000 - 5K OCI's
3) Mobil Clean 7500 - 7500 OCI's (I know this is a blended oil but it's still pretty cheap)

I'll be using WIX oil filters for each change.

I'd really appreciate feedback from people even if it goes outside of what I've listed above.

Thanks!

I don't like M1 or other syns that Ive seen in GM truck engines... I do like pennzoil in most every engine, especially the smaller GM truck engines.

Id suggest the pennzoil route with LC and an AC delco filter.

Of the choices you gave, I'd say go with the Pennzoil. Havoline would be a good lower cost option. I would recommend doing a used oil analysis with TBN since the vehicle sees both city driving and towing.

If your dad likes cheap oil you might try Havoline. Any of your other choices would also be good, nothing wrong with any of them, strictly your preference and whats makes you feel good.

The M1 PAO synthetics can be somewhat noisey in these engines - not generating the noise, but seemingly transmitting more internal engine noise than a dino formulation.

The 3.5 V-5 does not fall into this noise issues.

My Colorado has not used a single ounce of Mobil-1 10W-30... so far I've driven 4.5K on this OCI... much of it in the Poconos & Blue Ridge Mountains. However, I did use a full bottle of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treament with it. Engine is very quiet either hot or cold.

My father has a 05 Colorado with the 4 banger. He is retired so doesn't do alot of miles per, lots of short trips. He went with Pennzoil 5w30 dino and A.C. Delco or Napa Gold filters and changes the oil every 3000 miles.Thing runs/sounds great. My brother has a 04 Canyon with the straight 5 cylinder engine.Exact opposite, lotsa miles, long trips into the city.He uses Mobil 1 5w30 and A.C.Delco filters changes the oil every 8000km or so.His trucks runs quiet and seems happy with this combo..you pick

All of the oils mentioned are fine, so I'll toss in Trop Arctic Synthetic Blend for a buck, at the Dollar Tree Store. Since your Dad is Thrifty, he will like it.

I would also use a 1qt. bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil, in the fuel, 4oz per 10 gals. of fuel. It will clean up the top end, if it even needs it, for 4-5 tankfuls of fuel, for about $3. It should run nice and smooth.

I forgot to mention the Wix filter has a "needless" ADBV while the factory-issued AC-Delco PF-61 does not. Being the filtering system stands straight up & oil channnel above the filter keeps full of oil after shutdown, no ADBV is required. Why chance a faulty ADBV that's not necessary to begin with??????

you might try uni-lab 10w-40 brand. You can get it a dollar general for $.90 a Qt.Seems like good oil.

Isn't that stuff only API SH or SJ?
