Recalls, TSBs, and the like

There's plenty of news about recalls and TSBs these days, but I don't recall hearing anything about them in the 1950s or so. Did they have them then? If not, when did they start? Tks.
 
They had a similar process but it was paper only. They would send the "tsb" to the dealers and it was also available in separate paper books with the service manuals. I have a few dated in the 60's and 70's.
 
Service Bulletins were not required to be publicly available until 2016. That required a literal Congressional mandate to make happen, stemming from the GM ignition switch situation.

Previously, they were only in manufacturer's service information, which requires a subscription to access. Before electronic service information, they were distributed like supplemental service information.

So, yeah, they existed, they were just really hard to get ahold of, with distribution limited to dealerships. The only other way was if they were re-published by Chilton or Haynes.
 
So what I'm reading here is

Like many things, it's not necessarily that there are more instances, it's that we're more aware of the instances.

However, when you look at percentages, 1% of the 1955 production volume is miniscule compared to 1% of 2024 production volume.
 
I just got a recall for my Genesis Coupe for the clutch safety interlock switch. I changed mine about 5 years ago as it broke then. Almost got my self ran over. With the PB start once it's cranking it won't stop immediately when lifting the PB. There's a momentary pause.

One day I was working on the car, had the dr door open. I wanted get power to the engine circuits. With me standing outside the open door I reached in and pushed the PB twice to get power. It was in reverse and started right up. I very quickly pulled up on the ebrake to stall it or it would have run me over dragging me across the front yard!!!!!

Got one for a full undercoating treatment too from last year. They have canceled twice on me.

At least with most Ford recalls, there is a provision that if you have bought the component being recalled, you can apply for a refund.

News cycle was very slow and controlled.

You did not hear of anything as there were little means of delivering anything like now.

Yep. We've not adjusted to how fast media can arrive to us. Used to take days for any sort of response, if not in person, as it took time for anything to travel by horse, train or truck. Now... it zings along at the speed of light.

They do say that but I may have the old part?
I just realized I misread this. As far as the old parts replaced under warranty, they have to be held until disposition is provided by the manufacturer. Since they pay for the repair, they have the right to call the part back for inspection.

I replaced the part myself a few years ago. If Hyundai changed the part then I probably have the old part. My problem though was the pad it strikes was gone and broke the stem off the switch. I have since replaced the pad. The current recall replaces the switch as the return spring is breaking on the contacts leaving it NC all the time. So I would still have the old switch.
