Rebuilt vs. remanufactured parts

Rebuilt parts are parts that have been taken apart inspected and made operational by replacemant of worn components.
Remanufactured parts are parts that have been thoughly inspected and all the components have been tested the bad components are replaced or reconditiond.
So a remanufactured alternator should be as good as a new one if done right and is a better part than a rebuilt one that has been simply taken apart and repaired.

Seems to me that the term "rebuilt" can mean almost anything. My local auto parts store stopped selling "rebuilt" starters, alternators etc because they install the parts. They had so many failures under waranty they lost money having to replace rebuilt after rebuilt. I have heard the same sob stories concerning CV joint axel assemblies. New dealer $350// $240 for dealer supplied remanufactured and only $67 for an AP rebuilt with a lifetime garentee. That waranty is frustraing if you've ever replaced the same front axel 2 or 3 times in a couple of years. I now only buy remanufactured and then only from a reputable supplier. ed

semantics, it depends on who's doing it.

removing a bearing, inspecting and replacing the same bearing is a horrible way to do business, and it isn't cheaper. Any rebuilder who has been in business for more than a day realizes that his labor costs are the same whether he uses a new or used bearing (or most other wear parts, like brushes, etc). Then add the warranty costs, inspection labor costs and his own rework costs on those that do fail, using new bearings (that don't need inspection, added warranty hits or internal rework) is a business 101 slam dunk.

Actualy these terms have industry standards and do not mean "anything" and it is not semantics!

Remanufactured means the entire unit was disassembled. All parts are check to make sure they meet OEM spec.! ANy parts that are out of spec. or are common wear iteams are reconditioned or replaced. Any updates to fix known problem area's are also performed. The reassembled unit is then tested to make sure it is with in OEM spec.!!

Rebuilt means that the unit was disassembled to find cause of failure. Failure or failures are repaired or replaced and the unit put back into service. A function check is performed but usualy not anything close to OEM spec.!! No updtes to fix known problems. No reconditioning and no inspections beyound finding and repairing the failure. Example a guy on the corner buys a starter core from the salvage yard. He cleans it up and takes it apart. He finds that the bearing is bad. He replaces the bearing with a new one with out doing anyting else. He can now sell it as rebuilt!
