Real ID or internal passport

Got my driver's license renewed the other day under the Real ID act. What a headache.

You would think a current US Passport would be enough. No way. I had to bring back a current utility bill and a current paystub in addition to my passport.

This stuff is getting way out of hand. Is it a driver's license or an internal passport? When I was a kid we were told that the Russians were awful because they required internal passports. Now here we are.
 
They still don't have Real ID figured out here in MN. However, they do offer the "Enhanced Driver's License" which works in place of a passport for travel by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, and most of the Caribbean. It does not work for air travel to these places though.

Wife and I went to get EDLs since we were going on a cruise and found the same mess with needing all kinds of documentation. They wouldn't accept our documents. Why? The city we live in shares a zip code with a neighboring city, so some of our (government issued) documents have our city listed and some have the neighboring city because that's where the post office is.

We ended up just getting passports. Copy of birth certificate, fill out a couple forms, get your picture taken, done.
 
In NY when I last renewed online, the only thing I needed to do ahead of time was a quick eye test which DMV would for free or a local pharmacy that could do eye tests would do it for $10 and transmit the info to DMV. $10 was better than a trip to wait in line at DMV. This was one or two years ago.
 
Personally, I want a "Real ID for Real Americans" not the cheaper "Group II" so to speak, type license.

Oneeye, we absolutely are requiring a driver's license to vote now. Just not in my state or yours---at the moment.

I suspect that this is related to that. Most of the readily available confirming ID is geared to people working straight jobs. W2, utility bills and the like. A young hipster guy living in shared space or newly arrived in town has to write off for a birth certificate. By the way, they made a photo copy of everything I gave them

That's one of my objections to the "group II" type license. Some politico in say, North Carolina, decides that there is an ever so slight political advantage in doing so, and voila! Only the Real ID works for voting in a law passed no more than six months before the election.

Real ID is an unfunded mandate that violates the Constitution's 10th Amendment on state powers, destroys states' dual sovereignty and consolidates every American's private information, leaving all of us far more vulnerable to identity thieves.

With more and more states issuing driving licenses to illegal criminals and states are accepting that as I.D. to vote then its time the USA got a real I.D. that must be turned in when you die to get a death certificate.
You can bet no one would win the popular vote because of the illegals and residents of the marble orchard voting.
 
The big push behind the Real ID act is primarily to get one of those awful close up, overexposed photos of your mug for the facial recognition software databases, along with the other various invasions of privacy involved.

Thats why they won't allow glasses or smiling for driver license photos anymore. Not all states have joined in, unfortunately N.J. is one of them that has.

I have both my passport, and the passport card, which works like the "EDL" in that it's good or ground crossings, or by sea to the carribean, etc, but not on any air travel. a few years back, i looked into getting the EDL( Ohio is a border state after all), so i could skip the passport card next time around, but the one piece of paper i didn't have, was a social security card with my middle name. the one i've had my whole life, without my middle name isn't good enough.

oh, and they have to send all my documentation to the BMV(in OH it's a Bureau, not a Department) state headquarters to have it verified. it takes about 2 weeks to actually get your fancy new EDL.

now to renew my standard license, i just walk in, vision check, fork over about $40, smile for the camera, and boom, bob's your auntie.

One can get a registered copy of your birth certificate at most courthouses as they can download them at least in MN.
I had to get a new one last fall because federal revenoose didn't believe it was me calling because social security(not much of the later) had screwed up my birthday. I sure would like to know who or how that happened as I have several security clearances and never an issue. Same thing happened to my lawyer almost the same time when he applied for his social security to get medicare to get out of Obummer care.

Heh heh I wondered about getting my last license renewal . I've been wearing glasses since I was 8. I certainly need them to drive. The lady insisted I have my pitcher taken with the glasses off. Was that for better facial recognition?

Real ID has nothing to do with border security, the souther border is wide open, that is simply the ruse to get people to comply.
 
I don't subscribe to conspiracy theories....But I think they got that one right.

You write someone out of the Real ID Act and they are instantly second class citizens. Does your kid go to college in Canada? As far as I can tell, he won't be getting a Real ID.
