Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

Does kangaroo land have Amsoil? I just noticed they have a 10w-60. $10/qt US as a “preferred member.”

HTHS 6.6
KV 100c - 24.2

I might try this for the next change in my M3.

Edit: found the Aussie page. Not sure how this price compares to the others.

I've never seen it in shops here but can probably get it online I'd imagine. The only three that are easily obtainable for me are Castrol, Ravenol or Penrite.

A bit off topic, but I saw a while back that Motul have a new 300V 10W60 that they brand as 'Le Mans', which caught my attention. Since 300V is a racing product I guess it's not really suitable for road use, but looks like a quality product. Perhaps still not as impressive numbers wise as the Ravenol RSS though. https://www.motul.com/en-US/products/13504?product=MOTUL+300V+LE+MANS+10W-60

So I don't know if it was mentioned but I was lurking on the Penrite website the other day and I saw they do a 10tenths 10W60:
https://penriteoil.com.au/products/10-tenths-premium-10w-60-100-pao-ester
100%PAO/Ester.
Only annoyance is they only do a 5L and no 6L or 1L.
Probably about equal to the Ravenol but today's it $92 at REPCO.

They also do the HPR15 with is regular synthetic but for some reason is usually cheap as chips and you can at least get the 1L bottle:
https://penriteoil.com.au/products/hpr-15-15w-60-full-synthetic
$56 today at REPCO.

I'm not a huge Penrite fan these days but they do the boutique oils well.

The Penrite 10tenths 10W60 is one of only two oils in that weight you can easily obtain at Supercheap, Repco, etc - the other being Castrol. I once asked on another forum about the comparison between the Castrol and Penrite and supposedly the specs on the Castrol looked better. I don't doubt the Penrite stuff is good though.

I think possibly the Penrite used to be group 3 and has recently been reformulated as PAO/Ester.
The penrite is chock full of anti-wear, zinc, borate ester. Tons of the stuff. That and being PAO Ester should be almighty strong.
Should keep those bearings off the crank.
I cannot imagine the Ravenol being any better. So in answer to your question, no I don't think Ravenol is worth it.

Send Penrite an enquiry they are really responsive.

Actually, Ravenol does not say RSS uses no VII. It says it “could” use no VII but very clearly leaves the question unanswered, unlike another oil mfr who states it in big bold letters on their label.
That would be quite evasive and some wordsmithing atypical for Germans but maybe so.

The Penrite 10W60 doesn't state no VII are used unlike the 10 tenths line which advertise no VII.
Maybe both the Penrite an Ravenol use VII, I know the Castrol does as its know to quickly shear down to a 50.
This infers its difficult or impractical to make a 10W60 without VII.
If no VII is important then we're now looking at the 10 tenths 20W60.
But holy smoke that's a Beast oil.
But maybe worth trying?

Just wondering to OP, have you tried UOA?
This is ALS, the biggest environmental lab in Australia:

I'm sensing also, you have gone off the Penrite products. That's OK I did too.

If your happier with the Ravenol and the Engine seems to like it keep using it. Try doing a UOA as well to check bearing wear.

@High Performance Lubricants is there a potential 10w60 in the No VII Euro product lineup if needed?

I missed this thread until now.

I own an S85 powered M6 from new, I used the speced Castrol 10w60 for a short time, then switched to Redline 10w60. After years of hearing from Internet 'experts' that my rotating assembly bearings would be shot, I went through engine last year and checked the bearings and journals. All were in great shape.

I DO always bring the engine and oil up to operating temperature, before those sonorous trips to redline. Mine is a 6-speed manual.

So I can recommend the Redline 10w60.
