RANT! Subway Sandwiches

Pizza Hut had a decent consistent product (speaking of franchise models) Everything was portion specified and the process was mostly automated for the cooking end of it. You could pretty much an identical product no matter where you went.

Not getting what you want is frustrating for any customer. It happens to me all the time. Even at a Mom&Pop deli. I wanted a Ham&Swiss with mayo, lettuce, and tomato. I didn't like the amount of meat that they put on their $5.85 sub (hoagie if you're around these parts - yes, it took me awhile to figure it out too). I said "stuff it ..money is no object". The owner was right next to the girl ..and she calmly proceeded to make a $5.85 sandwich and handed it too me. I didn't realize it until I opened the sandwich later (I was in a hurry). I ended up with a $6 half sandwich since I had to hack the roll in half and fold the meat to make an eating experience that I wanted. I would have been much happier if they had thrown $0.50 more meat (weigh the stuff out if you needed to - for cripe's sake ..it's a deli) and charge me $1.25 more if you have to.

When I did go back I asked the girl why she didn't bother to tell me that she was going to outright ignore me and not give me what I wanted. I said that I would have gotten something else ..like a meatball sandwich with cheese ..which I'm pleased with as they make it.

I just got the deer in the headlights look in return.

This is a common thing that I encounter ..and in the places that should be highly flexible in their operations.

Subway is closing in on McDonalds for number of locations. It has passed them in some countries and is close, one wy or the other, in the US.

Doesn't make them good, the number of them surprised me though.

Speaking of sandwhiches, I find incredibly stupid how Mr. Sub will grill the outside of only a few specific (read: expensive) subs, and not have a toaster at all to toast the meat/cheese/bread.

My neighbor got monetarily rich on Subway franchises….he moved out of our slum, up to the big houses. More power to him, but I always told him that I won't eat the stuff. Come to think of it, so did the other neighbors……he would just chuckle. He has since sold 5 or 6 of the stores (to spend more time with the family), kept the 2 most profitable ones. He also owns some of those postal/shipping stores….only an insane person would pay their prices…….he just chuckles…….His wife told me he spends most of his days at the casino now.

Yup, that's another one-- Shipping Stores. I don' get it, but their profit margin is VERY high and their operating costs are very low, biggest is probably storefront rent. Other than that, you make a couple hundred percent off of that 1lb plate sent to Aunt Margie in MN by UPS Ground for $25-$30.

But I bet if I asked for more packing peanuts, I'd get them :)

I found most franchises to be tax shelters (or hollywood accounting pits) more than money makers. The real pay off came when you sold the franchise. Otherwise, it was a whole lot to invest for a "job". If you had the $$ ..you typically don't need a job. They expand wealth more than they produce cash.

Ever since they went to the 5 dollar subs, they got smaller.

Its very noticable.

Its the only healthy option for me at work, so I eat there often, its better than BK..

Most foreign interests have one "chieftain" that rotates ever widening members of the extended family or associates through the enterprise. They need that due to the 2nd generation being "mainstreamed" or advancing to more refined careers (or failing and screwing off).

Well, it can have its side effects in terms of cultural norms. It's sorta like the Borg ..but more pleasant to experience. It's more seduction than assimilation.

That goes for everybody else too. I've got big bags of them, and we don't recylcle styrofoam here. I'll head down to the UPS store and get them packed up for you...

As an ex-Subway employee, I'd like to add to this rant.

Once upon a time Subway sandwiches were decent. A bit pricey, but decent. In the past couple years though, everything they do has gotten cheaper. [censored] un-ripe vegetables, poor quality meat, cutting back on amount of veggies per sandwich, etc.

When I worked there we were ENCOURAGED to load the sandwich up with veggies, because they were cheap. Apparently this has changed.

On the other hand, what do you expect out of a $5 dollar sub? I'm pretty sure that all the footlongs were over $5 dolllars when I worked there 10+ years ago. 10 years of inflation + a sandwich that has DROPPED in price = a garbage sandwich.

Still no excuse to be so stingy with olives. You know that the over bearing store manager has been telling the poor sandwich artists that "olives are getting expensive, only one olive per customer!"

One of my fav sandwiches back in the day was BBQ chicken with cheese and lots of olives. MMMMMM.

Subways are like a lot of places there are good ones and bad ones.

Right; a good one near my work used to give out coupons for weekend specials and when I mentioned I don't usually work on the weekend they indicated "just bring the coupon in on Monday or Tuesday" and they would honor it.

A bad one told me a dinner time special price would not be honored because "by the time I got to the register" it would be "past 7pm"; it was about 6:57 when they started to make my sandwich. I have never purchased a meal at that one since.

You know, that could work both ways. Let them make the sandwich at 6:57, and then when they won't honor the coupon at 7:00, walk out.

Ack! A thread from the dead has risen to live again! I do not remember what the thread was about, however, when mentioning Subway sandwiches the general consensus is that they are a last resort for sandwich consumption
