I was standing next to my car while it was running for the first time in a while and I noticed it was a bit quiet. I listened for a couple of seconds and realized that a valve tick my car has had since I bought it 9 years ago was not present. I do know it was still there after a timing belt change approximately 15k miles ago. It was there at around 190k when I did my last oil change. I am wondering if the tick is gone due to cleaning from this last oil change with Castrol Edge, or due to putting in Quakerstate Defy. The Defy has only about 200 miles on it so I assume it was gone before then.

Which of these two do you think contributed more to the valve tick disappearance?

My previous oil change regimen was 80% Pennzoil conventional changed every 3-5k miles or whatever was on sale at autozone. Still had quite a bit of varnish when the valve cover was off but no noticeable black spots or sludgy looking deposits.

If anything, the Pennzoil conventional would have worked better.

Probably wasn't a valve tick. Probably a pinhole exhaust leak that rusted over or something.

20% loss of hearing

20% of the changes were whatever was on sale. I wish I could blame things on hearing loss. Then I would have an excuse when the old girl asks if I heard her.

Do you know the answer and we are to guess ?

Based on the info provided should this be in the humor forum.

As an old deaf man myself please allow some alternatives. By the way....for all you young folks out there....after about year 34-35 of marriage you also will "suddenly go deaf"...so just wait your turn.
A "tick" from an engine bay can be lots of things....I have had a small piece of this or that get embedded in a fan belt and tick every time it went around......had a water pump make a tick and go away....then back...and go away.....exhaust leaks can tick and yes they also can tighten up and loosen up.....causing the tick to come and go.....or it could have been a valve ticking that just wore itself a sweet spot and stopped ticking.....
