LOL, i just got back to this thread and realized I fat fingered 0w30 instead of 5w30. To be clear the current fill is Castrol EDGE Black Bottle 5w30.
The rationale to me was when I was at the store this was the only thing on the shelf that met the new API SQ rating and was also D1G3. Now there is more inventory on the shelves but it's not super important at this point to make a decision on what I want to run and stick with because I am still in the break-in stage. The truck doesn't get driven a ton although it is short tripped a lot so I will always want to run a shorter that factory suggested OCI. Right now the Castrol only has 300 miles on it.
Given that I most likely will never put more then 5k miles on any oil in the truck, and probably closer to 3 or 4k I have selected some options based on my laziness. And to me lazy is off the shelf because I am a FUD and despise ordering things.
Here is my (probably wrong) analysis of easily available cheap mainstream oils and brands.
What I won't consider.
Pennzoil Full Synthetic/Platinum/Ultra Platinum 5w30
Mobil 1 (any of the many generic ILSAC varieties) 5w30
For what reason's you might ask? Recently I have gotten on the bandwagon of having a little higher viscosity and a little more HTHS value while still staying in grade. I have no problem not running D1G3 oil in this Chevy truck but I also want to stick to a 5w30.
What I will strongly consider.
Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30
Quaker State Full Synthetic / Quaker State Ultimate Protection 5w30
Castrol EDGE/EP 5w30
I have had good luck with all 3 oils. Valvoline Restore and Protect has a good 3.2 HTHS value and Quaker State oils tend to be on the higher ends of the viscosity range for a xw30. The Castrol I just trust because of my 24 Ford Transit. 170,000 miles 25% of miles on Motorcraft 5w30 and 75% of the miles on Castrol GTX High Mileage 5w30 only burns 1 qt of oil every 10,000 miles and runs like a champ.
What I recently added to my consideration list.
Mobil 1 ESP 5w30
Castrol EDGE Euro (K) 5w30
I would have to order both online so strikes against that......but.........loving the fact both are API SP/SQ, get me the 3.5 HTHS, and are cheap at $28-$29 a jug. Again I don't care about the DEXOS rating had no issue before running the Valvoline Restore and Protect.
Thoughts? Again for my 2000 mile oil change already have the regular EDGE 5w30 waiting and the 5000 mile oil change will be at the dealer so either AC DELCO 5w30 or whatever bulk oil the dealer is stocking. So no rush to decide.
