Probably from oil spraying from the oil filter area and onto hot components, like exhaust manifolds?

And the knocking was the internal engine without any oil to mask its typical sound, not necessarily the sounds of pinging or a breaking engine. could have even been the oil being pushed through the filter not re-seated, maybe even gurgling instead of knocking.

+1 for BITOG.

Good idea. That will be an interesting used oil analysis.

I assumed the engine was cold - but I guess 15 seconds sure the ex. manifolds are warm.

Knockingsound notgood. So the oil all leaked out via the OF gasket - means you had oil pressure/flow for some time. A few seconds....hmm...10 seconds, maybe 15....OK

What I'm really stuck on where did the smoke come from?

The knocking sound is exactly why I'm sending a sample to Blackstone. The smoke came from oil spraying onto the exhaust manifold which was still warm and it continued to smoke a little after I got things sorted out.

If anything the engine feels even more powerful. Maybe I'm on to someting with this cocktail of Shell T6, Syntec, and leftover PU.

My 1993 S-10 Blazer with V-6..... I was driving home from work, swing-shift and about 10 miles from home I noticed a cloud following me. I was snowing so I figured it was snow kicking up behind be. Pulled into the driveway to open the gate and heard motor knocking when I got out and smoke coming out from under the hood. Shut off motor and lifted hood and the entire compartment all oily etc. Those S-10 V-6 Blazers have a remote oil filter behind the drivers side head-lite and one of the oil line fittings broke where it comes out of the motor. All fixed and 7 yrs later she still purrs... no telling how long that thing was dry coming home. I think it finally went dry about entering my gate, who knows but if you want to here some oil-less knocking motors run there are some on You-Tube, OUCH!

nope oil film is what takes up the space in between the bearings and crank. when its not there its gonna hammer hard.
but the valve train will loose oil first so i bet it was the lifters rattling if i was to speculate.

I warmed up the engine and went for a drive. Once I deemed everything normal and the oil temp was high enough, I did some full throttle to 8k redline pulls. Everything was normal. I popped the hood and listened. No unusual sounds. I must have run the engine for 10 seconds, 15 max at 2k cold idle. I doubt any oil got into the head during that time, since it all escaped through the filter gasket. Can anybody tell me from experience that my engine is probably fine?

You didn't fill new oil in before you started the engine, is that correct ? With the old filter gasket under the new gasket the most oil can get out through the double gaskets is no more than 1/2 quarts in 10-15 seconds. That how you get 5.5 quarts in to get to the full line on dipstick instead of 5.1-5.2 quarts.

I don't worry about damage to the engine for less than 30 seconds idle with no oil. If you are on highway with full oil but with double gaskets, you may lost all oil in few minutes and that will be a disaster.

the trick is getting to the oil spot quick. use any store bought products. But to the origional poster did you hear it running it differently? I think nothing at all was done to it. ive seen landcruisers run for hours with no oil pan and not seize. Actually two they both had power up in them.

What oil did you have in it? The lube shop I worked for saw many double gaskets coming in and going out. Hope your cars ok but im sure it is.

part of an oc is refilling with new oil. so i bet he filled it with oil before he started it...
like i said i saw it happen in oil change shops, that stuff sprays sverywhere!! a car can loose 2 quarts in the time the pit man yells shut it off. 30 sec can empty a pan pretty easily

I can guarantee you it happens in more back yards and garages than it does at dealerships and quick lubes. On the rare occasion it happens at the dealership or lube joint everyone is sure to tell the world. When someone does it to themselves they typically tell NO ONE!!!
The beating up on dealership garbage is really starting to wear on me.

Spot on. Hey, I hear my lifters even with oil in my old civic.

S2000 engines have very high oil pressure. 36 psi at idle (800 rpm) and 85 psi at 3k rpm. It idles at 2k cold. I tightened the oil filter, but I'm guessing the gasket touching the block was pinched into an oval, creating a space for oil to shoot out. What sucks is that I keep my engine bay so clean. I washed under the hood and it looks good but I still smell oil burning off the hot parts when I drive. At least I only wasted Rotella T6 and not the Pennzoil Ultra Euro I used on my last change. I will follow up with a used oil analysis.

that has to be the worst reading comprehension i have seen

Nice outcome OP, good idea not to drive off immediately.

This happened once to me a few years back. On my Yamaha I changed the oil and filter and cranked it up and it was all good until I revved on it. Then oil came splurting out.

Ever since then I try to remember to take a blue shop towel and wipe the filter mount base real clean. And also, after you're done and fire it up and wait for the oil pressure light to go off, looking under the car while tapping the throttle a few times has become standard operating procedure.

Yup. I saw a video once of an older Dodge van with a 318. They drained the oil, fired it up, let it run for a while, drove it around the block a few times, etc, and I think it took about an hour before it actually seized.

not sure i would have done that!
