Radar Detectors - Recommendations, Please.

If you meet a properly trained LEO with a modern LIDAR setup you are toast unless you use a jammer. And you are in BIG trouble if he notices!

Even a good instant on Ka is really hard to beat no matter the detector used. Most just beep.

Around here we have Valentines, but even they are just falsing or letting you know to get out your papers!
 
Yep. Truth is jammers are illegal everywhere. The FCC governs systems that emit energy. If they don't give you a license for it then it's illegal. Doesn't mean they can't be built - they can. Passive collectors, receiver detectors, are OK and outside the purview of the Feds even if some states outlaw them. The legal theory supporting the use of detectors is that a free people should know when they're being surveilled. The opposing view is that you're out in public with no right to privacy so states can outlaw them in the interest of public safety.

The FCC does not regulate laser devices- the FDA is the agency that deals with laser transmitting and exposure. Some states prohibit laser jammers but there's no federal legislation or regulation that prohibits their manufacture and/or use.
 
I have a V1 that I've had for over 10 years and have always trusted it. Now, with all the new collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control on new cars, it will constantly alert when I'm on a busy road (i.e. any interstate highway). It appears that these new safety systems use either X or K band. I'm considering sending it to Valentine for a update (one of the cool, anti-obsolescence features).

P.S. I checked on the upgrade with Valentine. Turns out that my detector is too old to be simply updated, so it would cost $289 for a trade-up to the current unit ($100 discount). Dang.

I noticed that too. Keep telling myself it's cheaper than a ticket. Still a bummer.
 
I ended up going to Best Buy and buying an Escort Max 360 last week:

After getting the detector, I started reading on the radar detector message forum, as well as watching some reviews on YouTube by Vortex Radar, and discovered that this unit does have a few shortcomings (doesn't have the best sensitivity, doesn't have the best filtering to prevent falsing from the K-band radars that are installed on modern cars, such as blind spot monitoring, cruise control radar, etc.). A lot of people have said that it should be better for the money, since it is the most expensive windshield-mount radar detector on the market (I paid $655 OTD). As Sprite1741 mentioned, the hottest thing in radar detectors is the new Uniden R1 and R3. But, no radar detector is perfect, and the new Unidens don't have a lot of the features that the Max 360 has, such as the directional arrows.

Anyway, I've been using the Max 360 for about 4 days now and it does seem to beep a lot in heavy traffic due to BSM, etc, but I'm also running it at max sensitivity (highway). Since I've never had a radar detector and have nothing to compare it to, it is not bothering me. I have it set to display frequencies of the signals it picks up. Over time, I'll start to recognize the common frequencies of BSMs, etc. It is already starting to use its GPS to lock out known false signals such as door openers on grocery stores, drugstores, etc. The automatic lockouts of false signals that are encountered over and over, such as the door openers, is one of the big strong suits of the Max 360.

I'm leaving Saturday to go on a road trip from here to Gulf Shores, AL., so it will be fun to test the detector on the trip. If I decide it's not for me, BB has a 2-week return policy.

Now, now...don't let physics cloud the discussion...

The real issue with laser is scatter and beamwidth. The radar wavelength is much longer, so the beam isn't as tight, meaning that much of the beam misses the target and travels beyond, where it bounces off objects, like other cars, or terrain, and can be picked up by a detector that is well behind the intended target of the beam.

With a laser - the beam is tight enough that the scatter is in front of the target, and the beam is smaller than the target. There's no light energy traveling past the target to bounce around and get picked up by a detector. So, typically, a laser is only registered by your detector when the cop has aimed it at YOU.

The lock-on takes milliseconds, by which time, you've already been clocked, and there is nothing to do.

The lock-on with radar is equally quick, but your whole strategy is to pick up the radar energy directed at cars in front of you, so that you have time to slow down.

That said, detectors have lost quite a bit of utility since LIDAR came out. Instant-on radar worked against detectors but had nowhere near the effect of the Laser speed guns.

Your best bet is a sharp look-out; the cop still has to SEE you to aim his gun at you, so, if you see him before he decides to aim at you and clock you, you can slow down. Further, beware the spots where they like to catch folks: where there is good cover for the cruiser and you can't see him until you're on top of him, or coming into a small town on a state highway and there is a sudden drop in speed limit. A precautionary speed reduction in those cases is prudent.

I used to drive from Stowe, VT, to the LGA, NY parking lot. 345 miles each way down 89, then 91, the 95. Horrible drive. And I used to see 3 - 8 speed traps along that route. My Valentine 1 was a big help, but I was saved more often by a precautionary speed reduction where my line of sight was reduced than I was by the V1 (arguably the best, most useful detector on the market) warning me.

what do you do when posted speed changes after 15 feet? (last panel conveniently half hidden by trees)
 
You know, I've been doing a lot of reading over on the RD Forum and since one of you guys (Sprite?) mentioned it.

It's funny that I've been driving for so long - nearly every day for over 22 years - and I've spent so little time thinking about surveillance countermeasures and tactics. Those guys over on the RD Forum are serious!

Astro and others who have mentioned situational awareness - anticipating geographical features of the landscape that are conducive to traps. Those guys talk about that a LOT.

Someone here also mentioned finding a "rabbit". For some reason that's something I've also not done very much. I think I'll definitely feel more comfortable doing it now that I have a detector. I usually do

Astro - what do you think the chances are of being accidentally swept with LIDAR by a LEO and getting advance warning?
 
Oh, I got super-geeked Wednesday! I was on my way to work and got my first, legit, LEO radar hit!

I was on an in-town freeway here in Nashville, doing PSL+8 (78 mph) when I got a Ka-band (35.525 GHz) hit. The Max 360's arrows indicated that the threat was coming from in front of me, and it took me at least 30 seconds at 70 mph to even be able to see the cop. It was a Metro Nashville marked car that was stopped on the side of the highway working an accident scene, and had left his constant-on Ka-band radar on. Strong signal like that, I got plenty of advance notice. The arrows worked exactly as advertised, with no delay. Showed forward arrow until I reached the source, then side arrow as I passed, then rear arrow after I passed.

I had the sensitivity on the lower setting at the time.

Pretty neat!

Oh, and the GPS system has already locked out a bunch of false signals from door openers.

In my experience, advanced warning is pretty rare with LIDAR. There's lots of false warnings, though, from reflected light off windshields (spectrum gets split up and you get a brief shot of the right color...at least, that's my theory).

Once in a while, you'll get a LIDAR warning before the cop targets you - and it's either scatter from his target, or he is sweeping traffic as he's pulling the trigger...again, my guess...

LIDAR is tough to beat. It is a very narrow beam, and reflects off the front of the car. The only way to defeat it, really, is to jam it with noise (this is a standard ECM technique in the fighter world - noise jamming), which would be bright light in the right color/spectrum shining forward to obscure the reflection (this may, or may not, be legal) or dramatically reduce the reflectivity of the front of the car (in the fighter world, we would call this "stealth").
 
Way back in the day one of the car rags did a test where they started covering up reflective areas on the front of the vehicle and drastically reduced the range that the laser would give a reading.

It wasn’t practical but it was interesting ...
 
I recall that test...with no changes, neither LIDAR gun they had would clock a black Firebird with the headlights retracted even at close range. They eventually managed to make a chrome-laden Cadillac de Ville unclockable.

Their term for laser jammers.

They use certain terms for it all. It's funny. They talk about something called "JTK" or "Jam to Kill". Apparently that is when you get the notification on your detector that you've been hit by LIDAR. You immediately (within 2 seconds, preferably) brake to PSL (posted speed limit), then hit a switch, disabling the laser jammer. By the time the cop gets a reading, you're at or below PSL, and no one is the wiser. They say it's so quick, the cop usually can never tell he's been jammed. To him, he just thinks he got a bad lock on you.

What you don't want to happen is them to realize you're jamming them. Even if it's legal in your state (which it is in most states), it's not going to look good.
