Quit Coffee--Feel Great!

Yep, coffee is great stuff and if you can drink it, have at it. My favorite was 7-11 and I took it black. Never cared for the flavored stuff, nor the fancy.

Hey, I probably could drink some, as the skipping heartbeats are said to be "of no medical consequence," but coffee is said to aggravate that condition. Also I have had occurances of atrial fibliration (surely butchered that spelling), once for 4 days straight in '93.

I just had the stress test and blood enzyme samples (or whatever they do) and came up clean. This week did the ultrasound of the heart to rule out for good as was getting mild chest pain too. Seems the chest pain has subsided, either from the Prilosec (works great for heartburn) and I think the coffee maybe was aggravating a tender spot in the esophagus (spelling again?) as occasionally I would get some that was too hot and get a sore burny feeling in there. Actually may not need as much Prilosec now without the acid from the coffee.

Ah well, as Paul said, "I have learned to be content with much, and I have learned to be content with little." Definitely not exact quote, but the jist of it. (Ah, and am I content with my plenty 179 quart oil stash.

Hey, I hardly drink more than a few beers a year, and when I do drink, generally it is the NA stuff. I think it is Labatt's Nordic or something like that. Tastes like regular beer.

So now pretty much all I drink is a lot of fruit juice and water. Don't eat that much meat either, but definitely not vegetarian or PITA. I believe in killing animals for food. Just my sedentary lifestyle is not good with a high protein diet.

So yeah, ye who can drink coffee, do drink it! I'm not really coming out against it or for it, just noting that I am getting along pretty well without it.

I believe I average a few cups a week with an occasional treat of a mocha at a coffee shop a couple times a month. Its extremely rare that I have more than one caffinated drink a day. I learned that lesson quite a while back. I used to usually work evening shifts so getting up early was a problem. Well, one of my hobbies is paintball and there was a field that opened at 9am which was about an hour and a half from me. Going to IHOP was part of this trip and I had two cups that didn't really work as I was ready to go back to bed halfway there

. The first game was a snoozer...not really exciting and I was still dragging so I drank the Mountain Dew that I normally had at lunch...for an afternoon kick. And then the second game starts......>>100%<< different from the first game. Sort of like the DDay landing in "Saving Private Ryan" if you like. I tell you what! Two cups of coffee, a Mountain Dew, kicked into high gear by a LOAD of adrenaline was about the end of me. I was literally shaking as if I were freezing by the end of the game! NEVER AGAIN have I bought a MD for a paintball trip. Man, it was a horrbile feeling!

btw, drinking alot of caffeine irritates the GI mucosa of the stomach which can lead to Stomach bleeding after decades of use.

I use to be a big coke drinker. used to drink 7-8 12 oz cans/day. When I quit 3 yrs ago, it was a huge difference in my life. I don't feel the crash in the mid day like I used to. I can sleep better. I don't have the heart arrythmias

a month ago around 9pm, I was in a bookstore with a friend that has a starbucks in it. I ended up drinking one of those double coffees a friend of mine bought me one without asking me. I didn't want to turn it down and be rude so I went ahead drank it. I was wide awake until 4am. I'm not a coffee drinker either. it's way more potent than the cokes I drank back in the day.

More importantly, coffee reduces the lower esophageal spincther tone (LES). What this means is that you will put yourself at risk of gastric acid reflux (GERD). NOT GOOD! If you are experiencing a lot of hearburn lately, you may want to cut out coffee in its entirety. I commute 60 miles each way and I used to consume 1/2 pot of coffee each morning during my drive. That lasted 6 months and I had to quit my cofee intake to nothing because of heartburn. I never had problems with heartburn before and I can tell you, it sucked. I'm ok now and didn't have to take any antacids or proton pump inhibitors to fix my acid reflux problem. Quitting coffee did it for me.

Excellent Info. I will cut back on the Prilosec to every other day and see if I get the heartburn back. If not, maybe I can quit the stuff altogether. I hate having to take pills.

Hi all!

Back in October, I got relocated at work and I have to buy my coffee now or brew it at home. I resented that at first, but I've come to realize it was a good thing for me as far as moderating my intake. I now make just enough at home in the morning to fill my mug, then get it refilled once later at Starbucks for $0.65 (I'm a regular and the ladies are always very nice there). It's cut my consumption down significantly from what it used to be and I don't get as jittery as I used to.

I feel much better now that I have given up caffine(6 cokes a day at least) and carbonation cold turkey. I had headaches for 3 weeks but it was well worth it.. NOW soda is WAY too sweet to drink at all..
