I went down the rabbit hole the other day about coolant for my 2018 4Runner and my 1991 DLX pickup with the 22RE. Like lubricants, there’s quite a bit of conflicting information out there regarding coolant. It quickly became apparent that posters on other fora who seem to be reasonable and well-studied don’t consider pink to be a suitable replacement for red. That left me looking for both coolants. Rock Auto had a good deal on ACT-002, so I emailed AISIN. This was their prompt reply:
“Yes, the AISIN ACT-002 coolant is non-silicate, non-borate, non-amine, and non-nitrite. It uses Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT), and it aligns exactly with the specifications for your 4Runner.”
Six gallons shipped to me from Rock Auto was $93 total. Not bad. I have no problem paying for OEM at the dealer when it comes to certain things, but the cheapest SLLC I could find near me was $33 a gallon.
As for the Zerex Asian Vehicle red, it was widely accepted on other sites as being a direct replacement for Toyota red. The issue was finding concentrate as I want to do a descale/flush in the old truck. I found concentrate in several places, but O’Reilly wanted $40/gallon including shipping, and NAPA is out locally with no option for shipping ATM. I went to Valvoline’s website thinking shipping would be too high. Well, it was free. I got two gallons of Asian Vehicle red and a free Valvoline ball cap shipped to me for about $43. After such an easy time dealing with their oil rebate, and now this great deal on shipping, I continue to be impressed with Valvoline.
