My thoughts so far...

FICA taxes are, at least in my understanding, something you are supposed to recieve in return in retirement. The extremely wealthy won't get some huge payout, so why should they pay more in?

it seems as if Bush and Kerry are both equally disliked by everyone. Yet I feel that some of you are off base with some of your critisisms of Bush. Outsourcing of jobs and overal globilisation of teh economy cannot be stopped. Creating some artificial govt. involvement in the economy will have a serious negative effect on us. The world is chaning continuously, it is in our best interest to adapt to fit the needs of that world. this protectionist bullsh*t is exactly that. Let's get real. BTW-there are significant numbers of jobs that are imported into this country. this whole item reminds me of all of the idiots twenty years ago who were freaking about about robots taking over every manufacturing job. Wow, where's all the chaos from that? Second, a draft will not happen. Third, 98 senators voted for the patriot act. Kerry wouldnt' just try to erode our freedoms by giving up our rights to our own govt. He'd start by putting U.S. citizens under the power of the world court. He's a worthless internationalist weenie POS. For the earlier comments about Edwards and Kerry just taking some of the tax breaks that they are allowed--If you're going to ***** and moan about the rich paying too little in taxes why don't you lead the way and pay a little more? You're blind if the hipocracy of their actions doesn't slap you in the face like a baseball bat would. Honestly, at this point I think that the majority of liberals are either elitist pricks interested in power and control or undereducated individuals who are envious of those with more than they have.

We are currently staffing the active military with a large proportion of NG and now even some reservists. While this may work for a temporary build-up, it will not work for a multi-year commitment. I do not think we have enough troops in Iraq to complete whatever the mission is, so a draft is highly likely.

If a draft were to occur, suddenly more families would become concerned about our military ventures abroad.

As for FICA, you would be right if there was a dedicated, independent fund and the program was purely for retirees based on what that individual put in. However, it is being administered more and more like a social program adn the FICA taxes more and more commingled with other revenue, with mere "paper" entries accounting for it. Not that I am defending Gore, but that was what all of the "lock box" discussions were about in 2000.

How the taxes are collected has a major impact on how they are spread among individuals in different income strata. Right now, it is a tax rate that is in the 16% range (including employers share. If you are self employed, you pay both the employee share and the employer share) with no deductions, up to an annual income limit. Not that I am advocating this, but the impact on various income strata would be different if the tax rate were lower, but more annual income subject to the tax.

In my state,KY,we have many, many imported jobs from Japan. We have a Toyota plant where the Camry is made,we have several part suppliers from Japan based companies. We have a glass manufacturing company from Canada,we have an aluminum recycling company from Canada.
My home town has 4 Japanese based factories that employ several hundred.
We have a Tokico,Panasonic,KI USA and a steel plant, all Japanese based.
The town North of us has a plant that supplies gears for Honda transmissions.
If these jobs had not left Japan and came here,my state would not have the thousands and thousands of jobs that it now has.
These jobs are just a drop in the bucket that are in the US from foreign companies.
Would we have wanted their respective government to have stepped in and kept them from coming here?
I don't think so.

ekrampitzjr said:"further terror attacks on US soil in retaliation for US involvement in the Middle East"....

We were attacked BEFORE Iraq,we were attacked after what Liberals call 8 years of peace.
When are you liberals going to understand that these Muslims HATE us because we are not Muslim,we are infidels to them and we are to be destroyed.Plain and simple.
These terrorists could care less where the US has troops, they want us dead.Cant you people see this?

Do you have the data to back that up? How about a table of income versus taxes paid for example? The IRS web site has all the data but it's a lot of work to mine it. Here is year 2000:

Top 5% pay 53.25% of all income taxes.
The top 10% pay 64.89%.
The top 25% pay 82.9%.
The top 50% pay 96.03%
The bottom 50% pay 3.97% of all income taxes.

The top 1% earns 17.53% of all income.
The top 5% earns 31.99%.
The top 10% earns 43.11%.
The top 25% earns 65.23%.
The top 50% earns 86.19%.
The bottom 50% earn 13.81% of all income.

The "rich", however you define it, are paying a lot more tax than the lower income levels, both in absolute terms and in proportion of income.

You can see that just by looking at the 10% level - paying 64.89% of all income taxes, earning 43.11% of total income. That's some great deal for the rich

[No. I don't consider myself among the rich. Neither do I view them as scapegoats to pillage for my benefit].

Keith.

Keith I don't think you need to feel sorry for the rich, BTW these are just imcome taxes as well, not including consumption and property taxes. Since the poor spend every dime they make, guess who pays a higher % of their income towards consumtion taxes??? Also, I think assuming a higher percentage of the tax burden is acceptable when your income is 10x the national average.

Can you please explain? The employer witholds FICA from your paycheck, and then is obligated to match that. The employers matching contribution is not the employees money. The employers contribution of FICA taxes are part of the expense side of their income statement.

I'm amazed at the envious attitude. You seem to take the attitude that people who have succeeded should be punished for their actions. Who gave you the right to decide how someone else's money should be used? BTW-how many poor guys do you know who are writing lots of paychecks? Who employs you?

Care to answer the same question? Sorry, but you've got to sustain a society that maintains your advantage. All your bounty is somehow derived via the foundations of the baseline economics of the society. If you continue to penalize the lower rungs of the ladder ..eventually the "consumption" creeeps up to create an ever increasing underclass.

Why do you think the division is getting worse? It's simply because there are too many people competing for too few gainful jobs.

Why do you think that you should somehow not feel this effect over the FULL SPAN of the society??

The rabble could just as easily blame YOU for NOT creating a decent enough enviroment for them to live in ..since you claim to provide so many of their worthless jobs.

Try and keep in mind that we live in a very fragile economic enviroment. Plus or minus 1% in unemployment spells the difference between an expanding economy and a receding one. Are the advantaged supposed to prevail under all circumstances??

Gary,
First, I don't agree that we're losing our middle class. Second, I'm not saying that the self-employed individual is some sort of hero, but if he is successful he is a productive member of society, and hopefully he is creating jobs. Why vilify him as so many lefties on this board would? You suggest in your posts that I am some sort of silver spoon benefitiary. Well, I am not. I am a full time employee of someone else, and I attend college at the same time. I work on a full commission basis; I do not recieve any type of salary or draw. I simply believe in the freedom of the individual to make his own choices, and I believe that a man should be able to reap the consequenses of his actions, whether good or bad. The government is not the solution to the problems of the world. Let me know when the govt. has been successful at interfering in the marketplace to provide a more platonic world for all of us. In my opinion many in the left have made the government their church. They believe it has infallable ability to provide for them. Futhermore, the more govt. is used to level the financial outcome for the majority of people the less a man is motivated to improve his own situation. Let's face it, ownership for your actions produces better outcomes.

Gary Allen, well thought out posts!!!!! When the income gap increases like it has in the US, and credit maxes out for people that can only sustain themselves via credit, then demand for the products and services that the "entrepreneurs" make and sell weakens. A great read is "Running on Empty." You can't make it rich in any economy without the hard work of the working class. If they can not sustain themselves, then neither can the so called rich.

Gary, since someone from this board will inevitably call you it, I'll do it for them and get it out of the way: COMMUNIST. LEFTY. LIBERAL. Even though in my book, your nothing more than a common sensed individual.

Don't tout the entrepenur as some capitalist hero just because he/she is repsonsible for employing others. If this accumulation of wealth is in the midst of the decline of others ...how has this benefitted anyone but the individual? That is, he/she is only their own hero. If you don't move more people toward self actualization then you displace, the only thing that you're celebrating is the ability of the individual to weasel money out of someone else's pocket in into theirs.

What good do they do for the society?? (rhetorical and admittedly loaded question).

Carrera79,

Nothing personal, pal ...I don't know you.

No, we're not losing the middle class ..but it is being redefined ..and deminished. This is a natural progression in the maturation of the global economy. You cannot expect to maintain your elevated platform if the rest of the world is competing for it.

Why should ANYONE within the society NOT suffer the effects of this NATURAL evolution?? Do you see ONE REASON why I should be aided in my desire to be exempt from this natural effect? Do I deserve "a helping hand" in my quest for upward mobility while the average wage of my fellow citizens continues to drop??

I ask the same question of people who don't seem to worry about defecits.

They are telling their kids and grandkids how their money will be spent, long, long before they've earned a cent.
