Tomorrow is the dedication of the Columbine Memorial.

It's located next to the high school at "Rebel Hill".

My friend lost his daughter that day. It was the first day warm enough to eat lunch outside, April 20,1999. She neither made fun of her killers, nor was she a "jock" which they professed to hate.

Her father had to wait all night at an elementary school before they came and told him his daughter was dead.

What can we do (reasonably) that we don't do already to protect our children?

Pabs said it. Get involved. The more you know, the better prepared you will be. Also, it should go without saying, that getting involved reaps unimaginable benefits. Both now and down the road.

Support your schools. Talk to, know, and support school teachers and other school personnel. Talk to your kids. Support programs that have police officers assigned to schools (state your support at City Ouncil meetings and back it up with your willingness to have tax $$$ pay for it). Know the officassigned to your school and ask them if they have a plan in case of emergency. Don't live in fear or give into it in any way. Enjoy life. Treasure every moment, especially with your kids. My 2 cents worth.

Have faith and understand basic statistics.

Look at the odds of a such an event occurring again and compare to say a fatal car accident(we almost all get into cars). I think you'll realize in the grand scheme of life's tragedy's the odds are beyond low.

Stay involved with your kids! Know all their 5 W's. Being a parent, there is no excuse not to on a old.
