Question about Oil Change Interval

My last oil change was in April, and this was put in:

Filter: Bosch Distance+ D3330;

Oil: 1 quart of Supertech 20W-50 SN, four quarts of Napa 10W-40 SL grade fleet oil I got on a sale in 2011, and 1 pint of Marvel Mystery Oil.

I want to run the filter 15,000 miles and have now run 4020 on it, averaging a little over 40 miles per day. The filter will do it; I will leave the filter on at the next oil change which will be at 7500 miles.

Do you guys think this oil change interval is OK for this 1996 Avalon? I just want to do scheduled maintenance all at the same time, such as a timing belt job, drain & refill of the tranny and cooling system, wheel alignment, etc.

I am thinking of running 5W-30 Toyota dino in it for next winter but have not decided yet. That change will come around November 1st.

Thanks.

Around here, heavy oils go on sale a lot and they are cheap. The climate here is pretty hot, even in winter it is not all that cold, and I have never seen any problem with mileage when I compared the two. On the open road, this car gets about 28 miles per gallon at 65 m.p.h. In the summer here, warm up time to full operating temperature after being parked overnight is about one mile or five minutes in town.

The only times when the car sees really cold weather are winter trips up to the mountains or the deserts north of the 36th parallel (any place north of Las Vegas). It can get awfully cold then.

Well, I have been using heavier oils in summer for the last 175,000 miles in this car, (I got it used at 27,000 miles) and it has not exploded yet...

M1 0W-40 or M1 10W-30 HM (Both A3/B3) with a FU all have the potential to go 15k in your application and placate your desire to run with a heavier oil. You can then stop with the silly MMO and 20W-50 stuff.

I think your fine. Sure current fill is thick, but it's summer so no harm no foul. Just keep an eye out for a deal on a quality 5w-30 between now and November. I'm guessing the Toyota dino isn't anything special, so save same cash and get a jug of MS5k or PYB at Wally if you don't come across a clearance deal.

The coupon.com deal on Synpower is pretty good at Wally rollback prices. Right now. Think that's still on for a few days. I got two jugs @ 18.66 each. Or napa syn sale is about the same price and comes around a few times a year. My local napa closed so not current on that one. Current AAP rebate deal on Edge or PP with FU is good if you can wait on rebates. That gets you your next long drain filter.

Edit: sorry that should be 17.66/5L on the Synpower with $5 coupon.

Why people just don't go with the OEM oil spec's, I don't know.. use 5w-30 and a new filter next time!

Take it to the San Manuel Casino & turn it into a real bankroll, I guess.

05LGTLtd, that is a good suggestion, but my oil stash grew large; now I want to shrink it. This will take about three more years before I knock the stash down to where purchasing new oil is an option. Since my car has no significant oil burning issues (it seems now to consume a quart about every 10,000 miles) this present system works OK. There is always another sale right around several corners in these parts.

Someone suggested changing the filter, but the Distance+ should go the 15,000 miles, & why waste money? If it was one of the lower end filters it sure would be changed.

The filter will probably hold up, but I wouldn't do this.

Also, keep in mind that Bosch filters are made by Purolator, which has been experiencing issues with the media inside tearing.

You're best using a 5w30 synthetic, or at least a blend like Maxlife. Filters are cheap enough to replace every 7500 miles.

Well, yes if you have the Toyota 5w-30 conventional in the stash, it would be a good choice for your avalon.

The Distance+ model has shown no tearing issues to date. This has been discussed on other threads.

I do have a PureOne in my filter stash, and that has indeed been demoted to a single use, short OCI filter. That model is indeed subject to tears.
