I don't know the composition of the Supersyn antiwear additive, but an AW additive can form iron complexes. And these complexes can further enhance the antiwear properties by forming an antiwear film. These stay in solution and are not filterable, but act as a chemical antiwear agent. These complexes will be detected by uoa spectrometer, shifting the Fe concentration higher.

May I play the devil's advocate here?? IF and I say again IF the iron readings are from "chemical leaching" with the 5W30 product and IF M1's formula is so unique as to cause such then why do the 5W20,10W30,and other weights not exhibit this "leaching" process? Only the 5W30 has the unique formulation? Vey doubtful. Only the 5W30 produces iron particles that can be picked up in a used oil analysis? Even more doubtful. Then used oil analysis are useless to determine wear, unless of course a M1 product shows well then all the faithful chime in about how great it is. If Havoline,Valvoline,SOPUS,Schaeffer,Amsoil,Royal Purple and any others I forgot to mention went out-of-business I use the 5W30 M1 product without reservation. Well,no I would not... I'd use the 5W20 instead. Well, no, I'd just use Warren Products.

I don't remember TD saying anything about M1 Fe leaching.

Whatever it may be, he has indicated that M1 is not performing as well as the competition. Just read his posts.

The kind of PPM you are talking about has nothing to do with wear as in life of the engine.

Wasn't there something about TD saying that Mobil 1 0w40 wouldn't be good after 1k miles on a D.I. Turbo VW car? saaber's car, I forget the exact model... though to be fair, that car minces just about any oil put in it. lol :P And I'm sure the oil would still be good, I don't want to mis-paraphrase him... I think it has something to do with the notorious intake valve deposits.

Yes he said that and the only oil that could hack it was (wait for it)... RLI Biosyn.

So we are talking about actual wear particles then??

FWIW, and your mileage may vary, I have used Mobil 1 5w30 in my Olds Cutlass (Well my Dad and I have) since it was new. 135k and 22 years later, no problems at all. No oil burning, engine noise, runs smooth as a ribbon. I acknowledge the high-iron levels some see in their used oil analysis, but as far as detrimental value?? I dont know..I haven't experience any in my case..
