So next week im flying from my little towns airport (bqk) to Denver. Layover in ATL (only place my airport flys to) i have never flown connecting flights. All my flights are denver. There and back. My question is after i get searched at my departing airport (bqk&den) will i also be searched again at ATL when boarding to Denver and returnig home? My mother who flys frequently with SW says no, and internet searches are hit or miss. The reason i ask is because i have a medical implant and just want to not have the extra hassle of being searched again and again. And explaining over and over.does anyone have any experience with this? Ive never been to atlanta airport so i want my short layovers to be as efficient as possible.

As long as you don't go outside the secured area. Should be no reason to, but it's possible to leave the secured area if you're not aware where you're going at the airport.

There are promenant signs (and most places a big red line on the floor) leaving the secured area in atl. There is no reason to leave it plenty of food and such inside.

You're a fortunate guy never having to catch a connecting flight before!

What they said- no, you generally do not have to go through security again. Assuming you remain in the secured area, and its plenty obvious where the secure area is, you are fine. The exception is if you leave the US and enter into another country, and vice versa. You will have to go through immigration and customs - they are two separate processes. TSA maintains a website, and airlines do as well, that give indications of average delays at airports. Some are faster than others.

Talking Oz here (YMMV)...

my regional airport flies to the majors.

Security is limited to a "do you promise"...so once we get to the majors, we are bussed to a back door with it's own screening, trays, and walk throughs and sniffers.

So technically only really screened once.

It's been a while since I've flown, but here's my take on it. The airports create a secure zone that encompasses all terminals and gates. For example, in Philadelphia the secure zone includes the hallways that connect about a half dozen terminals, it's pretty expansive. Once you're in the secure zone, you're "secure". If you travel to another airport, and remain in their secure zone, you're still "secure", so no further security checking need be done.

I did have one incident years ago, in the early stages of the security checking. I had a connection in Las Vegas and it required leaving one secure zone and entering another, I did miss that connection flight. Again, it was years ago and I assume Las Vegas airport corrected this problem. Problems like that probably established the security philosophy in my first paragraph.

Yes ive flown numerous times but have always done straight shot and that was before my medical implant. After i did the math to drive to another big airport and pay to park, it made sense to fly out of here, 5 mins away, free parking, and i get to arrive in denver early morning.

I have metal in my ankle and have flown without issue. I think it's titanium, which is non-ferrous, and their equipment knows the difference.

Anyway I got selected to have my hands swabbed for explosive residue. Why? Only the blue shirts know.
