I have a 2008 mustang v6 with a sealed transmission. It has 48k. I was wondering if it would be best to do a drain clean the pan and fill with cheap stuff and let it run a week and then do another with amsoil and do a drain fill and filter.

If the oil pan is easy to drop, get an OEM gasket and drop that sucker.

Otherwise, at only 48k, a few simple drain n fills will work like a charm. depending on how dirty the tranny fluid is, i'd just go directly to your oil of choice, in this case, Amsoil.

I'd do a drain n fill with Amsoil, drive around for a week and then do another drain n fill. This will insure that the oil concentration is as close to being 100% Amsoil formula as possible which is better then having say 50% of some cheap fluid and 50% Amsoil if you were to do it the way you described.

Just my :2cent: having some experience and good results doing it that way (and every 60k or some after that)

Thanks for the reply. The tranny does have a pan. It's sealed with no dipstick, hence why I don't know if the oil is good

While you have the pan off, install a drain plug (B&M, etc). You will thank yourself next time you do a fluid change. Or if a deep pan is available, buy that. They often come with a drain plug. Greater capacity = greater cooling.

I am not the original owner. The pan has a plug on it. I want to pop the hoses off of the cooler, but I cant really add fluid back unless it sucks from the lines, which it does not I believe. I may just drain the cooler anuways

Interesting - since you are a Ford parts guy you know how. But I assume it drains down? So do you need a pump to fill it up? Or do you just turn the car downside up? (LOL)

You use a pump, almost like a MityVac (sp) to purposefully overfill the unit. Then when the trans fluid at the proper temp per the PID on the IDS you loosed the center plug to set the level.

That being said, if you hunt around some of the Mustang specialty pages they make an add on trans dipstick for the 5 speed auto.

I have a hand pump that attaches to the one quart bottles. I also have the fill tool. I do know that they make a dipstick, and I know how to fill it. Basically what your saying is overfill the pan and let the pump push some fluid out of the cooler.

What good reason is there for this design?

Dealers have dipsticks that insert into a rubber plug where the dipstick receptacle is / was.

The good reason is that ford makes more money off of it. Its almost impossible to do a flush at home. Sealed trannies are apparently what the high end companies are leaning towards so ford jumped on the bandwagon
