So while back I got a Pennzoil Conventional and filter deal at advance auto, gave that to the neighbor for her 04' Cavalier. Today at lunch, I ran to the Autozone and got Quaker State Conventional 5w20 and a STP 6607 filter. The idiot counterguy, told me I should get Mobil Super 5000 or Valvoline Nextgen, cause the QS he used gunks up a engine. I told him to shove it and ring up my items. I paid and told him I know people that have used Quaker State Conventional and Pennzoil Conventional for years without blowing a engine. He just stood there like a moron. Have you guys encountered this like me? The guy had to be like 19 yrs old too. How many of you gentlemen and ladies have used QS and for how long? I have used it for about 6 yrs now. I have some Kendall 5w20 synblend I am going to use or do something with.

thanks in advance,

adam

There was merit to this issue MANY years ago (certainly more than he was old, like 30+ years ago), but it is a non-issue these days. QS is a good as any of the other oils...

2010_FX4, I know my uncle on my mothers side always used 10w30 in the 70's thru the late 80's and he never had a wax, sludge issue or anything, and he went 4k on oil changes. Yeah, this kid is there most of the time when I pick up parts or need something to help a neighbor or friend out, wish they would fire him already. Johnnydc; yeah there is a woman there that is my age, and she said he messes up stuff in the store often, but she makes him fix it.

I hear customers complain about Quaker State at work makes me wonder why they come to a quick lube at which Quaker State is their flagship line only to use Valvoline conventional.

Good point. There is a QS place me that is always busy with long lines on friday and all day saturdays.

Tell him that you agree with him and that he needs to make it his mission to stop AZ from selling it.

Tell him to escalate it as far as he needs to and to not take no for an answer.

Tell him that there is a corporate and media conspiracy funded by big oil to cover this up and he will encounter a lot of resistance from the management chain when he tries to explain himself. But he must keep on going because many of his superiors have been brainwashed.

When he is challenged on the fact that he has only one case of this happening, tell him to reference the faked moon landings, 911 and ufos as evidence that cover ups succeed and that no matter what, he MUST trust his gut feeling

Over the summer, I bought a jug Of Maxlife Nextgen 10W-40 from an O'Reilly's, to take advantage of the FAR gift card offer.
The counter guy told me that he would never put any Valvoline in any car, and that he used GTX.
I told him that GTX used an additive package very similar to what Valvoline used and that I'd had one of the best used oil analysis I've ever seen from any BMW with the very same Nexgen I was buying.
He did tell me that he still wouldn't use Valvoline, though.

Yeah, typical idiots at part stores that know little to nothing. I thought about running the Valvoline Maxlife Nextgen I got myself sometime in the future, dont know yet.

Back in the late 70s or maybe early 80s, Quaker State had a large batch of oil that had problems. I'm pretty sure the oil gelled up or did something similar. To help restore confidence in the oil, they came out with a lifetime guarantee for engines that used Quaker State and changed it (I believe) every 3K miles. I remember reading about the guarantee on the can and seeing it in some of their advertising.
Maybe this guy pulled a Rip Van Winkle and has been sleeping for 40 years. There is nothing wrong with Quaker State oil.

Yeah, I have been using it for quite a while myself, as my dad always used it. My grandpa used it or Wolfs Head.

I have seen several GM, Chrysler, and Fords in the '70s and '80s that were full of creamy brown sludge under the valve covers (more than 1/4" thick) and all they ran was QS with 3K OCIs. I know that things have a way of being blown in and out of proportion and had I not seen it for myself, I would not have believed it either. However, these issues no longer happen and it sounds like the kid heard just enough about a now defunct topic and chose to continue repeating it without investigating.

Even thirty years ago, a lot of the problem was people using 10w-40 of that vintage coupled with fuel dilution. Leaded fuel decidedly did not help, either. The vehicles of the late 1970s vintage on up that I worked on in taxi usage with Quaker State 10w30 didn't have any sludge issues. Of course, the oils reputed to cause sludge depend upon to whom one spoke. Some people blamed Pennzoil, others QS, others Castrol.

I never saw it, but our engines were under what I consider close to ideal conditions. While some consider taxi service severe usage, remember that these engines were almost always at operating temperatures and ran on LPG (no fuel dilution) and used 10w30 instead of 10w-40. These conditions allowed for 6,000 mile OCIs on conventional.

I was shopping for a van last week, while looking at one I popped the fill hole cap to try to get an idea of the maintenance history. I commented, "Looks all clean in there" and the early 20's salesman piped up "Must not have used Pennzoil then!" All he could have possibly been doing was parroting something daddy told him at best. I didn't say anything but I was thinking dude those are urban legends from before you were born, we still see posts like that on here every once in a while though, sometimes these things die hard!

Regarding Quaker State there was a recent discussion on here and an older poster than I commented he had worked at a gas station way back. He noted the detergent and non-detergent Quaker State was in virtually identical containers but the non-detergent was a hair cheaper and they sold/used a lot of it as a result. He speculated frequent use of non-detergent Quaker State had something to do with the sludging rep and it makes sense.

Some of these "typical idiots" at part stores are true professionals and know more about cars and automotive systems than you ever will.

I am an old grandfather, 76 years old. Back in the 1950's, I always used Sinclair straight 20 weight oil. No problems. In the 1960's, I usually used Quaker State Super Blend, and I believe the cans were marked "10W-20W-40". In the late 1970's, I began to use the new Mobil 1 synthetic oil, and have used it ever since, changed once a year

Never had any problems with the Quaker State sludging in my usual 5,000 mile OCI. I always used a 5,000 mile OCI back then, because it was about half way between the 3,000 mile severe service OCI and the 7500 mile regular service recommendation for most of my cars back then.

Thax: There's only been one counter person I've met who knew a smidgeon about oil, and it was a lady at a local oil store. She knew every European specification and viscosity and available brand off the top of her head, along with which ones for which application, along with all the easy North American ones.

Another one, with whom I deal very regularly, was certain that 0w-40 would be too thin for my Audi in the summer, but 5w30 would be just fine. And he's been in the business for at least 25 years.
