No disrespect buy unless you're Lake Speed Jr. with a degree in oil chemistry, I don't care who you are or what your opinion is and neither should you of mine. I am not trying to change anyone's mind regarding BMW LL certified oils. I will say there is now enough evidence now with piston oil ring deposits that cause them to lock and oil consumption on those pushing above 5K service intervals. The BMW LL only certified camp has been under the delusion that "LL" means magical better performance but what it really means is BMW trying to sell you the idea of a lower than the competition maintenance car. Personally I'd rather buy a used vehicle from someone who's ran a regular non BMW LL certified 5W30 and changed their oil at 3 - 5K than someone who touts only BMW certified LL-01, 04 oil with 7-15k intervals.I'm sure kschachn appreciates the "schooling" by you on what LL stands for, HTHS and all the rest. You'll do fine here. lol
There are considerable differences between an LL-01 oil and your bog standard GF-6/API lubricant, these include anti-wear chemistry and volume, high-temp/high shear viscosity (HTHS), myriad OE engine tests...etc.No disrespect buy unless you're Lake Speed Jr. with a degree in oil chemistry, I don't care who you are or what your opinion is and neither should you of mine. Ah yes but it lost its LL-01 certification in 2015 with the FS reformulation and never reapplied or went for LL-04. It does have Mercedes and Porsche certs but that won't pass go for the BMW LL only camp.Plenty of Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40 on the shelf at my local Walmart today.
You are starting to lean toward misinformation at this point. Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40 lost LL-01 a few years ago (it never went to LL-04), but regained LL-01 approval about a year and a half, maybe two years ago. Are you even aware of the differences between LL-01 and LL-04?Ah yes but it lost its LL-01 certification in 2015 with the FS reformulation and never reapplied or went for LL-04. The LSJ mention was classic btw.. Considering the credentials of some of the members here.
Go back and read what I said again. I never said Mobil 0W40 had LL-04 or even tried to apply for it. I said they lost their LL-01 status when the changed the formula to FS. This occurred somewhere around 2015 -2016 however there were tons of stock so old formulation Mobil 0W40 LL-01 was available through 2019 in many stores. I see they got the LL-01 cert recently back yes but it was absent for a few years. You are starting to lean toward misinformation at this point. You can download the PDS from here:

That's actually not how that played out.Go back and read what I said again. I never said Mobil 0W40 had LL-04 or even tried to apply for it. Yes. BMW LL01-2018 and LL04-2018 eliminated 0W30/40 from approval list. In November 2015 Mobil1 released API SN version of M1 0W40 and already eliminated LL01 bcs. they already knew that BMW will make a change. So it was not Mobil1, it was BMW. Reason was oxidation of 0WXX oils in that grade and OCI. With API SP BMW reintroduced 0W30/40 onto list for LL01-2022 and LL04-2022. Those that still have esters in it like Mobil1 ESP 0W30 still don’t have approval (LL04). The oxidation requirements of BMW are just too high for esters. But that is only if full OCI is fallowed. That's actually not how that played out.
BMW changed the requirements for LL-01, changing the limits on oxidation and other factors, which @edyvw, who has worked on getting oils approved for the Euro marques, has written on. Basically all of the 0W-40's lost LL-01 when this happened. M1 FS 0W-40 was the first one to get it back, IIRC.
M1 FS 0W-40 would never have been eligible for LL-04, since that's based on ACEA C3, not A3/B4 like LL-01.
You wouldn’t “go” for Longlife-04 with the same oil you previously had Longlife-01. You are not understanding what the approvals are based upon.Ah yes but it lost its LL-01 certification in 2015 with the FS reformulation and never reapplied or went for LL-04. I told my least favorite member here about the 3-jug sale yesterday. Just Kidding! For what its worth, I just placed an order at Walmart for 3 jugs of QS 5W40 Euro and the order went through with expected delivery tomorrow. So it looks like they are back in stock but will know for sure tomorrow.
It has been intermittently listed, then goes away, then comes back, on Walmart.com for a few weeks now.For what its worth, I just placed an order at Walmart for 3 jugs of QS 5W40 Euro and the order went through with expected delivery tomorrow.
