I mentioned in an earlier thread that since my wife has just changed jobs, she will be driving a little over 5 miles to and from work each day. I was going to go with synthetic. Since I do OCIs religiously at 5K, would my favorite PYB be satisfactory or should I go with my original thought and use synthetic. She will only do this three times a week and the Xterra will see some extended trips into civilization since we do live out in the country. Thanks for the help in advance.

I'd say that if you used the PYB with a decent filter for 5K, you'd have life left in it. Do a run like this, get a sample and let us know.

As RambleJam said, why synthetic??

Because synthetic basestocks resist the harsh conditions of short trips better than conventional.

Sorry Guys. I did post in the wrong Forum. I thought I was in the PCMO when I posted. If somebody can move this it would be appreciated. Someone asked why synthetic; mainly for the short trips to and from work. After thinking about it for a while I thought PYB might still be a good choice since she was only making the short trip to work and back 3 times a week with longer voyages of 20+ miles the rest of the time.

Which synthetic basestocks? Because few handle fuel dilution well.

Synthetic has worked great for my mother's 5 block commutes on her 97 since... 97, and like 170k miles. UOA showed we could use the non-severe service interval because the typical use included some longer drives on the weekends, like 150-200 miles.

SO I think it would be beneficial for the OP without need for the 5000 mile OCIs.

Does anyone know of a current VOA on PYB 5W30. I found one from over four years ago but can't find something more recent. Do you think it would have changed much since then. As a matter of fact, if there are some interested, and would like to tell me how to do it, I'd get one done. I put this here instead of the VOA topic section because the subject matter was already under discussion.

No, but the UOA's I've seen indicate the add pack in PYB hasn't changed during it's SN run. Lots of moly with some boron, no sodium, with decent shear resistance.

I've seen a few posters claiming the SN PYB actually has synthetic base stock in it. If this is true why don't they market it as such and how is it still pretty cheap?

Because if they did, people wouldn't buy their "High Performance Dexos Blend."

Any SN conventional would be fine for your use. No need for syn except to sleep better.
I'd be more worried about the poopty Nissan radiator destroying my transmission.
