So, considering I can't get a straight answer (yet) from Toyota on the supposed change from 5w30 to 5w20, what repercussions could I expect putting the Toyota synthetic 0w20 in my 2AZ-FE?
Stuff sure is thin when cold - freaked me out - but the engine appears to NOT be going into nuclear meltdown so far.
If it turns out they say to keep running 5w30, will this oil do any damage?
Got me worried now...

tC.
Scion had a TSB in March, 2006 saying they changed from 5w30 to 5w20.
I just got a reply from Scion that said:

"We can understand your concern and apologize for the discrepancy.
This TSB was never officially executed and Scion does recommend 5W30 which is also stated in the Owner's Manual."

So now I'm [censored]. I changed to 5w20, and now 0w20.

I'm a BIG (in many ways

) believer in following the manual/cap for oil in my engines.

It saved me $1200 when my engine was 25,000 miles out of warranty because I had done better than the manual when the engine failed @ 61k miles.

The manufacture of the engine (okay their "zone rep") really turned pale when I asked him that they felt it was okay for their engine to fail @ 61k miles when the owner followed (or did better) then the manual. 2 weeks of denial became followed by apology and covering all the bills and rent a car.

Bill, (being BIG myself) I did what APPEARED to be the right thing when people started posting the TSB. I even sent an email to Scion, which I can't locate now as it's been 4 years.
So, begging the question, am I hurting my engine?
If the same engine now carries the 5w20/0w20 requirement, will mine have problems on the 0w20? Should I go back to a Xw30?

I would be mad too.

On the other hand, I run 5w20 in my Subaru (EJ22) that specs 5w30 (to my knowledge Subaru has not even considered the 5w20). Most people say it's not a good idea but I have been known to "push the envelope" on certain matters. I have had zero problems so far.

Good luck!

No. I doubt you are doing a thing to the engine. But my day job (which I do at night

) is not a engineer.

But no, I'd be about 99% sure you are fine. Look at it this way, one of my favorite TV shows is Amazing race. When they go into 3rd world countries (which we are not one YET)they hop in and out of taxi cabs. The most popular one? Toyota Corolla! Old ones. Just think how many miles those cars have on them, how poor the fuel is, how little they get their oil changed and yet, they keep going. (just watch the thick is better crowd come out... soon!

)

So me and my little Corolla getting normal on sale conventional oil every 7-8k and a fresh filter is going to be just fine as long and it does not rust out or get totaled.

The only thing you MAY have to worry about is *IF* you have a problem. Then Toyota is going to ask for receipts and logs of all your oil changes.

You can reply that you used THEIR oil because you know that TOYOTA stands for quality.

That will shut them up.

Take care, Bill

Gah. They need to remove the TSB from their database. You'll be fine. A lot of 5w30's shear down to 20, especially the dinos.

LOL - that was a classic post Bill.
I hear you on all points, and I like how you snuck the 3rd-world thing in there - I'm truly worried about that one.
But this car has to really last me, and I've babied the héll outta it since day-one.
My wife is not one that likes car payments, and we buy cars cash.
So, she's next up on the new car, and I think this one has to last me another 6 years before I get one.
"Lasting" as in it's fine as long as I make some expensive repairs is not acceptable. I have maintained it with trouble-free in mind.
I guess I have to think this one through before the next change. I might have to sell the remaining 8 quarts if my OCD won't allow me to keep running the 20.

Keep the oil, you bought it and USE it.

All is good. You'll be fine..

All is good.

Car is fine.

Good to go!

Take care, Bill

OK, will do.
I'm out of the factory 60k warranty, but I did buy an extended 7y/100k package from Toyota.
Got almost 70k on the motor now, so I guess it will take at least 30k before it implodes :)

It won't.

*IF* you were going to have a "issue" you would have had it by now. ( 99.99996% of the time. or close to that!

Next time, SAVE the $$ for the extended warranty. See, you've blown through the factory in less than 4 years. I have not heard about all the problems with the rig so I bet its been a excellent vehicle for you.

Mine has not been back to the stealership since I bought it... 168k miles and going.

Not a single issue/hiccup. Got a recall to fix the airbag switches in the doors, but that's it.
Great car.
And it looks/runs like new. Nobody believes it's 4+ years old.
Brakes work great too

I actually bought the extended warranty as a selling-point if I got rid of it as it's transferrable. Thought I'd have my new Camaro by now, but three kids in college put the brakes on that for now...

Good question, because extended "warranties" are usually service plans and the seller of the service policy can get away with being pickier about what they cover than the car company can on a new car. Even if you buy it from the dealer and it has the car companies name on it.

It doesn't say anything different than the OEM warranty.

I did run 5w30 and then GC 0w30 for the first three years.
Never really noticed any difference except that when I went to Xw20, mileage went up about 5-6%

If they are comfortable with back specing oil, so am I.

Since they replied to me that they "never officially executed" the TSB, and are telling me 5w30, what could the repercussions be? (forget about warranty, etc)
