Looking for advice on the Purolator synthetic oil filter, which I have never used. I can get one for next-to-nothing at Kmart, thanks to Shop Your Way points. Not sure if the synthetic filters also have had tearing issues.

This would be used next month with Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 in the Saturn in my sig. Looking to go 7,500 miles OCI as long the consumption stays under control. (mine does not burn much, for a Saturn)

Thoughts? Thanks.

Really? Even the Fram Ultra? The Ultra might be a few cents more than the Puro synthetic, but it's less than a dollar difference. ($9.99 vs. $10.29 around here, for the 20195 I plan to use.)

Sounds like the price is about right.

Puro. synthetic oil filter doesn't tear as far as anyone knows. Its a good oil filter. Almost as good as a Fram Ultra. The Ultra may have more depth filtering (thicker media) going on.

I have a Purolator Synthetic oil filter on my Altima and I have no reservations running it close to 10k miles. May.. Stress this word may.. Be close to has good as the Fram Ultra. The difference is that the Fram Ultra may haave a bit more efficient media in that the Purolator Synthetic specs are based upon 25 microns vs the Fram Ultra @ 20 microns. I said on here that I would use a Purolator Synthetic filter with no concerns, so I am staying true to what I said. I will cut it open for all to see and post them.

I have a PSL20195 on my SL2 right now. I plan to run it for up to 10k miles with G-Oil 5w30. Usage this cycle is trending just under 2k miles per quart.

I believe the longest I went on this application was 7.2k miles with an FL-400S I am 2.9k miles into this OCI and all appears well so far.

Here are some key words from the two manufacturer's own specifications:

Efficiency is 99% @ 20 microns for Fram Ultra, 99% @25 microns for Purolator Synthetic

Fram Ultra and Purolator Synthetic both mention wire backed media

Fram Ultra says "dual layer synthetic media," Purolator Synthetic says "100% synthetic media"

Fram Ultra says"up to 15,000 miles of engine protection" with the caveat "Follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner's manual "

Purolator Synthetic says "long-lasting filter, providing engine protection for 10,000 miles."

Personally speaking, I would not hesitate to use either of these filters on any of my vehicles. It is hard to imagine that either of these filters are not up to the task, so buy whichever one you can get cheaper.

Thanks for the advice, gents. I went with the Fram Ultra XG3600, which I have used before with no issues. Bundled with a few other items at AAP to make a $50 sale and get a $20 discount, it was $6.32 plus tax: dirt-cheap for this quality level.

Oil changed today at 123K miles on the dot. (123,000) Pennzoil Ultra Platinum plus a Fram Ultra filter; looking for minimum 7,500 miles, unless consumption goes way up. (which I doubt)

Always fun to kick ideas around here; thanks again.
