Off-hand, I can't really think of a drawback to having an ADBV. I can see NOT installing one at the factory if it's not needed, simply to reduce costs and simplify the design/manufacturing process. But when you think about it, the only thing an ADBV does is prevent reverse-flowing of oil. One detriment is that it might somehow slow oil flow since oil pressure has to first push the diaphram out of the way, but by all accounts this isn't a problem -- most filters have ADBVs, yet they flow plenty of oil. Another poster on these boards mentioned that his Baldwin HPG-2 filter had an ADBV which was relatively hard to push open (with a screwdriver, pen, or whatever he used). I guess that potentially could have reduced flow a small amount, but I even have doubts about that, unless Baldwin really bungled their ADBV design. Other filters have valves which move quite easily -- they're just thin nitrile/silicone flaps, easily overpowered by 40-90 psi pump pressure.
EDIT: Just thought of something. Even if you have a filter down low in a pendant position, you can still benefit from an ADBV. If there's a "column of oil" (oil channels) above the filter, it will drain out back through the filter until an equilibrium is reached (although the filter itself won't drain, as already noted). This "column" will have to be refilled when starting, resulting in a delay in lubrication, and therefore a small cumulative amount of wear over time.
