Mobil 1 vs Purolator One

The current ACdelco PF63 has a bypass rating of 22 PSI. A good thing IMO. If you change filters I would make sure the filter has a 22 PSI bypass rating. For some reason some filter manufacturers don't published a spec on this. They just state in spec Yes under bypass. Just my 2 cents.
That’s not quite as important as you might think. The oil filter rarely goes into bypass. It either needs to be severely plugged up or it needs to be -40 degrees and you’re going full throttle on cold oil. So as long as the bypass setting is reasonably close you will be fine. For instance if you’re using a filter that says the bypass is 25 instead of 22. In fact the bypass setting should be in a range of a few psi (such as where it begins to open vs where it is fully opened) A lot of manufacturers will specify the bypass as being 22-25 for instance.

I would only be concerned if the variance between the called spec and the actual spec was way way off (10 psi vs 35 for example)

You may be right. Its above my pay grade.

I sure wished I knew the reason why GM changed the spec on the PF63 and gave us the PF64.It is almost like they know something. I'm retired from a fortune 100 company. What I can say is my company did not change specifications unless there was a reason.

About 5 years ago I was poking around fram's website ran across a little something about their oil filter bypass valve they were boasting about their bypass design that had been tested to 19,000 cycles...... It sure made me wonder. I just looked and cannot find it now on fram's website looks like it is gone now.

On top of that back in the day I had 2 flat tappet cams eat about 3 cam lobes in a street/strip car and a jet boat. From the looks of the bearings on both engines much of the metal from cam lobes and lifters ended up in the filter and embedded in the rod and main bearings.

the reason i say this because the Mobil 1 went from louvers to holes when Highline warren started producing them vs louvers for M+H. i have nothing against louvers.
My only problem with louvers is the possibility of a minor manufacturing error that prevents the louvers from being pressed all the way, thus preventing the open ends from fully forming. I've seen examples of that on this very forum, pictures of center tubes with numerous closed-off louvers. That's far less likely when punching simple holes.

Is this a rampant problem? Not likely, but still something to watch out for.

Could be related to a GM TSB, seems vaguely familiar. Might try doing a search.

Maybe they changed it to be able to run it on the new L5P engines.

I recently cut open my Mobil 1, all was looking good. Today I got 2 free through a City oil filter exchange program. Newish Mobil 1 with holes from AutoZone. Someone also mentioned Oreilly’s Microgard Select, yes, got that too
