Purolator Pure One PL14476 cut open

Hi all, finally got around to cutting open the PureOne filter I used during my last oil change, I ran Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 for 5k miles on my 2007 Corolla. The filter looks really good, solidly built and most importantly no tears/rips in the media. If I could count on Puro to make all their filters look good like this.. id always use them.. thoughts? PS. I will be sending in a sample of the Pennzoil Ultra to Blackstone to get a used oil analysis done, as I never got a used oil analysis done before and wanted to see how my engine is doing, and it will allow me to see how long I could of extended my used oil analysis. Running Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 right now, and am quite happy with it.. by the way please ignore the yellow grit stuck on the filter.. its from the exterior of the cans yellow from me doing a lousy job with a mini hacksaw to cut it open.. dont have that many tools..

PU 5k miles? I hope that was a year or at least spring thru winter ( or vice versa ). Odd the media swelled - isn't it synthetic?

I changed the oil about 3 weeks ago.. so the filter was just sitting around..
I changed the oil out at 5k for 2 reasons, first I wanted to get an UOA done using the MFR recommended interval (7500km, think they since upped it to 8000kms conventional or synthetic)and second, I get bored pretty fast.. and yes it was in from November til beginning of March, alot of cold starts, and extremely cold weather. Im not sure about the media..

How did you find the PU in the Corolla?
I ran Mobil 1 0w20 (SL version) in my Corolla last winter and this winter I ran a mix of Mobil 1 0w20 and 0w30. Both ran fine and used no oil to speak of. I may use PP next winter since it's in my stash.

It's wise of you to do a used oil analysis at 5k. Every engine abuses oil differently. PU may go 10k in some cars but not all.

I used Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20 in a 2011 Hyundai Elantra after 3300 miles the TBN was .8

So early used oil analysis are smart just to see how your engine is doing. Good job.

This can't be!
Seriously, nice to see a Purolator that did what it was supposed to do with no failures.
I suspect that this is more typical of Purolator oil filters than the recent buzz here might lead one to think.

That doesn't say much for Quaker State Ultimate Durability.
Quaker State Conventional should last 5K let aloneQuaker State Ultimate Durability.

wow....maybe i'll rethink my next purchase. yes,i know my cars in my sig are easy on oil so probably not an issue on my part.

They are pretty stiff though....i felt them with my fingers...doubt it would of torn..

I liked it. The M1 seems good too...I like running 5w30 in summer..I have a jug of PU left..figured id run it in summer.

Cool - thanks for posting. My dad's Corolla usually uses Purolators since they're what AAP normally throws in w/ deals. The wavy pleats don't bug me, and AFAIK all Purolators look like that next to the metal crimp.

Bottom line here, no tears, and it looks like it did it's job on a reasonably substantial 5k fci. That as compared to recent raves for a competitor at 3-3.5k miles.

And as long as you, as you indicate, are happy with the results based on the dissection that's what's important. And thanks for the prior notation regarding yellow texture on the media caused by disassembly. Thinking that certainly would have been a point of contention/criticism for some had it not been noted.
