I think someone in this thread or another recent one in the Oil Filter forum showed possible tearing on a PureOne. Not as bad as the tearing on the Classic that started this all, but still there (and possibly could have been not as bad only because of less mileage/time)

Im seriously thinking about changing to Fram Ultra or Wix/store brand Wix. I dont have too many Pure One filters left so now is as good a time as any.

This is somewhat concerning. I suppose it to reasonable to say the efficiency drops as a result of a tear in the media. How much is unfiltered is still the big mystery. There may be some nasty looking pics of the OCOD after xxxx miles, but none that I can recall where the media tore.

Lots of unknowns right now. Are the recent threads about small tears in Puros isolated to a certain batch manufactured during a certain time period or is it more of a widespread problem?

It may be time to reevaluate PCs as a good alternative to the OCOD.

The pic of Purolator classic posted recently and the tear in my Pure-1 are in the same place on the same pleat next to the crimp. My tear was small but could have gotten worse over time. Could be a manufacturing issue with the pleat crimp. Maybe they need wide spacing there for the tooling to make that crimp, if so I would think this is a widespread problem. The other pics on the site I found also show the tears are in the same place.

My experience when playing around with the pleats on a cut open Classic and a cut open PureOne was that the media in the Classic seemed more stiff and brittle than the media in the PureOne. I think this contributes to the Classic showing more instances of torn media than the PureOne ... it's possible on both due to wide pleat spacing as we have seen.

With wide pleat spacing, and flow force from oil flow on the pleat tries to fold the pleat over which causes stress at the root of the pleat where it is potted into the end cap. That along with brittle media results in the media tearing. I could simulate that with my fingers on a cut open Classic by pushing the pleat over and making the media tear in the same place we've seen in the posted photos.

Purolator engineers need to address this failure. I know they are getting feedback on these media tears.

I like the Pure Ones especially for the grip - but I can just as well be happy with a Wix or a Fram Ultra as both can be had for a decent price .

So far the tough guard is causing no rattles so I think it's gonna be fine. This weekend when it warms up a little I'm gonna cut the fl400 open and see how it looks. It the filter I replaced with the tough guard. Thinking I may stick with the tg's, I tried the wix filter that's the size of the fl1a and it caused rattle on start up, haven't tried the wix that's equal to the fl400, it don't see any reason to try it now.

Glad it's working for you.

I may be switching to Microgards seeing they are now wix-made, but i will still run motorcraft as well.

I may still buy the occasional q-state filter (rebadged puro) from menards when they go on sale for 2 bucks.

I have a PureOne ready for my next OCI and after all this negativity surrounding Purolator I'm less excited to use it... Still going to (I mean heck, I have an ecore on their now) but I've wanted to try a TG for awhile now and I definitely will soon. I don't think Fram deserves such a bad reputation anymore. Every brand slips sometimes.

The classics must be getting cheap. K-mart is selling 5 qts of off brand synthetic blend oil with a Purolator classic for 10.99 in their ad today.

I saw Purolator classics on clearance at our kmart for $1 for some and $2 for others, out of the ones I used. pureones was $3.50
