Are these any good? or I guess to help give me a better idea, how do they compare to FRAM's orange filters? I just took advantage of Advanced Auto's Havoline sale and it included a Purolator Classic filter.

And on a side note, I really miss the "blue" Pure One filters. I think they looked much better than the gold, grippy ones. I don't think they would have looked to bad with the gold grippy stuff around the bottom like the FRAMs.

Yeah, I'd stick with the Puros over Frams anyday. Good flow and filtration. Very good filter. I don't care for the Fram's pretty flimsy internal construction, vague efficiency ratings, and higher price.

The PureOnes are an ugly color but better inside than they used to be.

about the color of the PureOnes, I disagree. I like the gold grippy cans better. AC Delco and STP already use blue cans, I think the gold sets itself apart

Yes, the Purolator Classic is a very good filter, especially for the price and much better quality then a FRAM.

don't get me wrong, the gold is starting to grow on me, but I just really liked the blue they used to use. It had a more metallic look to it than the others (ac delco, stp).

I must really be sick if I'm actually sitting here contemplating which oil filters look better

Anything is better than a Fram. The question is, is it as good as the Cheaper ST?

+1 For generally the same price or less, the Classic construction/characteristics makes it the better filter. Even if slightly more it would be worth it. rr's testing on this board add more confirmation to that assertion.

I would much prefer an oil and filter combo promo using the same/similar oil and a Classic than the Orange can, in that respect it's a no brainer.

As for the Pure One, the Guldens spicy mustard color, while not a favorite of some, adds functional texture, and improved efficiency. Since I don't see the filter after it's installed, the improvements more than make up for the non function related aesthetics.

Now filter manufacturers are pushing the old 3k mi OCI??

From the ServiceChamp .pdf:

What is the recommended drain interval?
Consult your owner’s manual for recommended change intervals. Our recommendation is 3,000 miles or 3 months.

Sells more filters that way.

Here's one I noticed in the ServiceChamp.pdf FAQs:

Why did you switch from metal to fiber end caps?
In order to make the Ecore design more environmentally friendly the metal end caps and adhesive were replaced by the thermally bonded non-metallic end caps.

No adhesives? ... "thermally bonded"? Is that like jean patches you use a hot iron on to make them stick?

Fwiw, I've recently used ST #3614 for 5k OCI, cut it open, and quite frankly it looked fine. And for $2.50, it easily the tops the glued natural fiber cardboard end caps of the ever popular Orange Can. Though, as I'm sure most are aware, I do prefer Purolator construction.

I reckon metal is no worse than nylon for the environment anyway.
Metal will decompose if you don't recycle it, and nylon has to be recycled or burned.
