I cut open a Purolator Classic L14610 that was on my Kia and has 5825 miles running Mobil Super 5000 10W30 oil over about 2 years. Not sure how to interpret the manufacture code. The pleats were tight all the way around except near the crimp. I couldn't see any tears anywhere. The black rubber valve was a little hard and kind of slow to go back to shape but there weren't any cracks. Overall I didn't see anything that concerned me. What do you guys think?

Exciting stuff. LOL! Really it seems most Purolator filters seem to be fine.

Interesting, so I suppose this predates the reported tearing issues? It must have been a shelf queen because I installed it in April 2016 and typically buy the oil and filter a few days before.

Purolator oil filters with date codes after this one have been observed with tears. Also, the date code was properly decoded.

The oil flow rate for the Kia isn't so terribly much - - that's a pretty big filter to handle the small flow rate.

That was the recommended filter size, I didn't oversize it with a bigger one.

This filter is a good example of why Puros were the darling filters of BITOG before quality went down the toilet. It looks great.

It looks a lot like the many Purolators (including Kmart version) I cut apart in the '80s and '90s---including the media area being larger than on skimpy filters pushed on us later.

Ah yes, back before they were junk. The good ol' days! I kinda miss those red white and blue cans, something extremely American about it that's no longer there with the bright red ones they have now that replaced the Classic! I love the look of the Boss, but not about to use one anytime soon until they get their ducks in a row, and that's a big IF at that. Purolator has a lot of ground ahead of them to convince me to quit using Fram Ultras anytime soon! Even the Tough Guard is lightyears better than anything Purolator currently makes. Sad that such a company that proudly produces products in the USA has let quality control fly out the window so carelessly..
