I don't like END CAP wrenches because of the problem stated. I use this one...comes in two ranges. So at MOST (if you have different applications), you only need two of these. They can only be used to REMOVE the filter

Yeah I had drained the oil and had to walk a mile to the store to get the new wrench. It is a silly gripe, but it was a PITA. Funny thing is that that same cap wrench installed the filter just fine, but would not take it off. It was not on there too tight, but it would not take it off for some reason. I could not reach up and get a good enough grip on it to get it off by hand. It was at too awkward of an angle.

Couldnt get a set of channel locks up there either.

Honestly there should be a factor standard for such things.

I have several cap wrenches and none fit the Purolator. They have worked on Delcos, Wix, and even on Frams (changed oil in a friends neon) Purolator is the first brand it would not work well with.

I usually use a cap wrench, too because there's no good way to get more than three fingers on mine either.
I find putting a paper towel over the filter flutes makes a nice tight fit for the cap socket.

Well I gave my old one to my buddy now I have a one size fits all tool. I will pass the tip along to him.

One time I was changing oil on an old 440 that was put on by the incredible hulk and was too big for my strap wrench.

I used my old FAL bayonet to stab it and twist it off.

Filters tend to "lock-up" after they are on the car ... so it's very typical for them to be more stubborn during removal.

Might try letting the engine cool completely down and remove the filter in the morning and continue the oil change. I usually do that, and seems like the filters come off pretty easily.

Yes, heat tends to expand materials, so if you are patient enough to wait for it to cool the filter will come off easier.

So even is hand tight going on, it might require some help like some type of cap wrench to get it started on removal.

A sheet of sand paper and a tight grip you can simply remove the filter with your hand.

If you can get your hand on them. On this car, I could not.
