Purolator Premium Plus v. SuperTech?

Ok, Meijer's is running a $1 off any purolator filter sale, which puts the Premium Plus at $1.99. For the applications that I usually by SuperTech's for (PF-52 and PF-25 equivalents) is there any advantage to the Purolator Premium Plus?

For that matter, while the sale lasts, is it easier to justify spending the extra $2 to get the PureOne's?

You could do it for political reasons; to keep another company or two (counting the store) in business. If all we had were walmart and champion labs quality control might decline. (See the clicker-bypass debates.

To be honest, with my truck, I've had better luck with the PF-52 SuperTech than the L24011 Purolator or PL24011 PureOne.

Have you tried the Purolators before?
Are you currently running the SuperTech?

Heck, I'm sure you can spare $2, so go ahead and give the Purolator a try and see how it compares to the SuperTech.

I've tried the PureOne...it worked fine, no startup noise, no problems. I was a little afraid of it because I beleive my oil pressure gauge measures pressure before the filter, and the PureOne seems like a flow restrictive design. I've never tried any of the other Purolators, namely because they were $1 more than the SuperTech (or, more often the AC Delco).

I've had good luck with many, many Champion Labs AC Delco Pf-52's, and have used a couple of the SuperTech's as well (They seem identical, right?). I did have one Mexican SuperTech PF-52 equiv. that had a bad ADBV, which caused a little noise and the oil pressure to build slowly on the gauge. I'm bascially assuming that it was an fluke manufacturing error, and I've bought a SuperTech or two since then for various applications.

Cool...if the PureOne gave you no startup noise, then by all means use it. If you drive like a "normal" person and are not constantly towing or doing HIGH rpm driving, you're not gonna have any issues with the PureOne.

I wouldn't pay extra for a Purolator over an AC until I chopped a couple open to see which one looks best. With a common, readily available number like PF 52, I wouldn't mess with after market stuff.

For 2 bucks try the Purolator. It could be just the ticket for your engine.

I've only cut one open, never actually used one. I believe they make the Subaru filters as well as some others. FWIW I thought the regular Purolator looked pretty good when it was torn apart. No cheesy strings, decent shell thickness, and no cardboard. By pass valve was similar to some Japanese Denso filters.

The point about keeping another company around is valid too.

This car, I'm sure was expensive so why go cheap on an oil filter. I am aware that the ST is a good filter for 1.97. But if there is a better filter that you can have total confidance in that costs 5.99, why compromise? The WIX filters are very well constructed, using high quality parts. Just my 2 cents.

FYI--- I recently switched from the ST to the WIX for my 2002 Explorer. I noticed that the WIX filter was 1 inch or so taller than the ST for my application...

Remember that a few people on the board have shown that the size of the outside canister doesn;t really tell you what is going in inside if you know what I mean.

To help you choose between the PureOne and ST, look at the Mercruiser oil filter study/comparison. These filters are at opposite ends of the spectrum. One is high flow, the other high filtration.

Ditto to jthorner's Walmart post. If we only have say 2-3 choices we will get the "orange wall" and their private label and without competition the quality on both could be worse than it is now.

If you want a cheaper Purolator Plus oil filter, buy the "Proline" filter from Pepboys. I buy them when they are on sale and save a bunch of $$ over the Purolator Premium Plus

Personally I use every opportunity to not buy from WalMart. The US would be a very sad place if WalMart were the only place left to shop.
