I changed the oil in my M-I-L's '02 Tahoe 5.3L on Saturday (Goodbye dino, hello Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic). The Tahoe had an AC Delco #PF59 oil filter on it. The new filter I installed was a Purolator #25288 that my F-I-L supplied. It was shorter than the PF-59 & did not seem to have a bypass valve. Do any of you see any reason for concern?

Hope you hung on to the PF 59. Most GM products have a bypass internal to the engine. The size may or may not be a problem. Even quality brands of the older numbers have wasted space in them. Purolator may now be covering the PF 59 applications using a filter with the same amount of media packed into a smaller space to fit in tighter spaces. If so, no problem. On the other hand, in over 3 years here, I have seen nothing to change my mind about sticking to OEM's except for the Honda Frams. The only reason I am not using AC's on my Chevies is that nobody carries my numbers.

Why? I guess it's a moot point, though. That PF59 filter is long-gone now.

Cutting open 2 filters tells you a lot. Unfortunately you still can't tell much about the quality of the media.

My Colorado uses the same filter. I can also use the AC PF-61... same exact size. The only difference is the 59 has a ADBV & the 61 does not.

My Colorado houses a stand-up/vertical filtering system. Is yours vertical also?... could explain why the Purolator has no ADBV.

yes, it is vertical. the Purolator filter does have an ADBV, just no apparent threaded end bypass valve, like the PF59 has.

You are eligible to use the AC Delco PF-61... no need for a ADBV in our applications. Not sure about a bypass valve in the 59 or 61... I'm still in grade school learning about oil filters... lol
