Purolater Premium Plus ..just cut one open..

These are #L30001 for the Ford V8...oversize cross reference for my Jeep 4.0L...bought a crap load of em for a good price...layed them all out and took a "at random" production number from the side of the can...looks good inside...METAL END CAPS..a by-pass that I can actually see and function with a wooden dowel...ADV functions nice..paper looks good...metal seam conecting the end of the media run..I've seen Fram's where the paper just overlapped itself a few times to stop the media run around the centre column

...the couple of WIX's I've cut open had a very brittle paper element....just an observation here on my part..I'll be using these from now on...had 16 years on my Chev with em...sold it to my brother with 234,000 miles on it...sounded like the motor wasn't even running at that mileage...his wife is still doing commutes with the S-10 everyday.The Purolaters get my Jeep oil pressure up quick

and I used to get a warning beep on the dash with the oversize Mobil's when I used them...mostly when it was HOT and after a short down time Will still keep cutting tham open though,just in case somebody tries to pull a fast one on me...like Bosch did

Is that a calibrated wooden dowel?

sorry couldn't resist....

The top-end Purolator filters are top notch. They typically score well even in Amsoil's tests. If I had a domestic I would not hesitate to use one. (Amsoil and Mann filters seem to work great for me)

On Bosch: I, too, have oberseved cheesiness in design and construction the 3 times I tore into them or just by looking at them. I think Bosch subs out to 2+ places.....

Actually I use my wooden,calibrated dowel in conjuncture with my trusty postal scale to check poundage of the by-pass opening...my Purolaters started to open at 18-19 pounds

I've been using Bosch standard filters on my Toyota Tacoma for about 2 years now with no problems. I still have one Mobil filter I haven't used yet, as I switched to Bosch due to price. The Mobil filters are gold by the time I get them to my door and the Bosch base plate looks identical. Aren't they both made by Champion Labs? What is defective with the Bosch? Also, where are you buying your Purolator filters? I wanted to try a "PureOne" for my application.

I don't know about the standard Bosch internals...I've cut open a Premium model and didn'y like what I saw..read the posts on the "Warning..no by-pass" who-ha..I had to go to the states to get my Mobil filters also...they are made by Champ Labs but are NOT the same inside as the Bosch Premium...the Mobil is a very well put to-gether filter.I just had a lag with my oil pressure using the Mobil's and went to the Purolater Premium Plus filter,which resolved this problem, that I get for a steal at Home Hardware stores...My supplier for my business wanted $8.49 ea. for the Purolater's and Home Hardware was selling them for $3.99 ea...bought a couple of years supply at that price.I don't know if they carry the PureOne type of Purolaters but you could ask them at Home Hardware.

The bypass is rated in pounds per square inch. You need to divide that 18-19# by bypass valve's area [in square inches] that's in contact with the oil. I think you'll find the setting to be about 8 psi.

Thanks Ken...the valve is a disc with a flat,perforated spring similar to the Toyota set-up.. around 5/8" across..I'll try using a trigger pull scale that I have for my adjustable triggers on my rifles...that goes from 2 to 12 pounds.

....Do you know what would cause the lag in oil pressure with the Mobil filter? The anti-drainback possibly not working or would it have something to do with the density of the filter media?

I use the Mobil 301 on both my 4.0L Jeeps...one is a Cherokee the other a Wrangler or TJ for us Canadians

...The Cherokee has a right angle stand-off adapter for oil filters and I have NO problems with oil pressure with that and the Mobils...the TJ's oil filter mounts right on the block of the engine.This lag for the TJ happens mostly when it is HOT and after a brief shut down...may-be heat sink on the filter buggering the ADV or the entire filter getting very warm do to the fact it's right on the motor...I don't know...both engines are fairly new..one is a 99 the other a 01 so age can't be playing a major role here..I'm using an oversized filter so I don't think it's flow...it's a wierd thing for sure...but the minute I put the Purolater on the TJ there was no problem with this lag again..comes right up quick and no more irritating warning beep on the dash.

I have a couple of M-301's that I've had for awhile. I plan on using them eventually on the 351C in my 70 Mach 1. If heat is going to be a factor in their failure then it should show up there, as the oil comes out of that motor steaming.
