Agreed. I am tempted to make it my desktop picture.

Thank you, very kind.

Honestly I doubt I'll ever use anything Purolator again. I was considering giving them another shot if they got their act together. Now I don't see any upside in doing so even if they did get it together.
Demar - this pretty much replicates my history as well. Although I used MC filters for years, I never regularly cut any open except a few until joining BITOG. I have since stopped using MC filters too after seeing the one on my PSD. FRAM Ultra, WIX, and Baldwin get the nod these days for oil filters and WIX/NAPA Gold for air filters. I see no reason in the slightest to waste money on Purolator products.

2015_PSD - Same story here. I have been using Motorcraft for quite awhile and after hearing all the bad press I decided to cut my first filter. It was a MC FL-820S. It was torn. TBT there may have been a steady stream of torn ones because it took 5 short OCI/FCI to clean up the engine. A WIX 51372 is in use now and have FRAM PH2 and TG2 waiting in the stash. Purolator should discontinue and recall troublesome part numbers.

I will guess the WIX will come out looking good just like the AC Delco did.

I see ZERO reasons to use them...

The last Purolator that I cut open didn't have tears but the metal endcap separated from the glue with almost no effort. I changed it before the OCI was up because it was leaking. Replaced it with a Fram TG

This does not make me feel good after I just put in a MC FL1A filter for my jeep...

Might have to switch to Napa Gold 1515 instead :|

Should I attempt to cut open the MC too? Although the only thing I have is tin snips...

The MC FL1A has not been a problem. It is a large filter with plenty of media. It does not appear to have any issues from the searches I made.

If you are going to cut one open, you can drill a starter hole for your tin snips.

I think you will be pleased.

Funny folks still bash the orange can. It is by far the most popular filter in the US. Went to a car show just last weekend and that was by far the most popular filter on classics and rods. (I am more of a classic "stock" car fan myself.. history is a delicate thing.)

One word: Advertising, Fram has a bigger, more aggressive advertising pitch than anyone else. For the average joe that doesn't know anything about cars, filters and oil it's easy to see why the Fram is the go to filter.

Looking at that endcap, you'd almost be suspicious it was a fault from the factory. I don't see how that rubber stuff could tear like that.

It is a POS, either through poor quality control or manufacturing/materials. Aggressive marketing or not, we have yet to see any model of FRAM have as many problems as Purolator has during the same time frame. For Purolator/MH's sake, I hope the new "family" of filters has solved all of these issues.

2015_PSD - +1 on all points.

We have seen a rash of torn Purolator made jobber quality filters lately. Very little evidence has surfaced as to the quality and reliability of recent Purolator/Mann/Hummel product.

And yes, I would like to see Purolator (an American idol) get it together.

I am not surprised by the crack in the potting. This looks like hoop stress (tangent to the circumference) caused the potting to crack as well as delaminate from the end cap. Notice this also occurs at the wide pleat space. The filter is a disaster.

Really sucks reading all this bad press on Purolator. I used to think highly of them but now I am thinking hard about switching to WIX. I won't use Fram anything except the Ultra if I had to and I don't really much care for the extended drain filters, haven't quite been sold on them just yet. Guess it's time to start stocking up on WIX filters when they come on sale! I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing about a WIX filter yet.

I hope Purolator steps it up. Our family has been using them for generations, my granddad used them on everything from cars to his farm tractors, dad used them on everything, and I used them on everything since I started driving. Until I joined BITOG I never knew about the drop in quality. I will hold out for the new line of Puro Classics in the red cans, but if they have the same issues as the old ones did, Purolator is going to lose a customer to WIX!
