Pros/cons of Yamaha filter design?

Heading down to replace the oil and filter on my Yamaha 225SHO and was looking for the part number for the oil filter. Wound up finding a tear down of the filter on thehulltruth. Wondering why the different design compared to other filters. What's the pros/cons of this type of filter? I've never seen another like it.

That type has been around for years. They were used in the 1990s and later for factory deliveries for some Toyota products and were available from certain dealers that sold them as aftermarket. One part number was 90915-20004, another 90915-20003.

Like the rest of OEM filters there was never an efficiency rating or any data, all that can be said was that they were different. I went out of the way for a while to purchase them for my old Sienna but I never saw a difference or a reason to continue.

This is the factory filter that came from my new Tacoma 4 cylinder truck.
I was going to run the factory fill for the entire 1000 mile break-in period stated in the manual, but decided to change it at a little over 600 miles because I was going on a 700 mile highway trip the next day.

This is that filter, and is not the same as the 90915-YZZD1 that my dealer sells for the truck...I think the factory filter is better but hard to come by, so I often use the TRD upgrade fiter (which is Champion built Toyota branded high performance filter available at Toyota dealers or online.)...

Yamaha chose it for their outboard and I don’t see any after markets that will fit in its place. Seeing it cut open I’m wondering why more are not like that. From the few anecdotal responses to the guys thread they said it does cost a little more and is a good design but it’s the first I’m seeing it.

Outboard filters have to flow a lot of oil always since most outboard motors operating range is over 6k RPMs. Maybe the design is less likely to collapse? Just speculation.

They have a plastic cage for a center tube, but not a fat one like e cores, so room for more media. silicone adbv, thick can, and a bypass valve that looks like the Purolator flat spring type. I think the P gasket was silicone too.

Denso must have ripped-off the bypass spring design unless Purolator/M+H was involved, which I doubt. I'd think that flat spiral spring design is a Purolator/M+H patent. Got a photo of a Denso with it?

I'm asking you to show your claim, that's all. You got a wedgie going on over there, lol. See any other brand of filter using that flat spring design like Purolator/M+H uses? Why do you think that's the case? It very well could be a patented design.

Great ... thanks for the photos - was that so hard? Still looks like Denso ripped off the Purolator bypass valve design. You should really try to get a sense of humor once and awhile, and not be so uptight about technical discussions, lol.

What's the pros/cons of this type of filter? I've never seen another like it.

Seems more like a depth filtration type media where that spongy style media try to capture as much particulate matter inside the medium instead of the commonly surface filtration you see with cellulose and blend media.

I don't think any of us can be conclusive about its effectiveness without having to do some sort of oil cleanliness test to see how well its keeping the oil clean. If you'd like you can volunteer to get an oil sample with particle count if you decide to run a filter like that again which could shed light of how effective it is.

Patents eventually expire and then anybody can use it. They can also license a patent from a patent holder.
